Hello everyone!

My parent's computer is a really old dell that's still running Vista.  Well, yesterday they had a problem which caused an error to appear when we tried to log in(image attached).  I told them not to do anything to it and I'll try to fix it today after I try to find stuff to fix it.  And now for the reason I'm here, I go to fix it today and something new shows up.  After it posts something shows up asking for a password shows up(another image for my crappy description).  I have no idea what to do about this, and I don't know what they did to the computer.

If there's anyway to fix this without having to go to a repair shop I would greatly appreciate it!  Thanks.

I've seen this a few times.

First thing is you want to see if you can boot into Safe Mode. If you can boot into safe mode do a virus scan from there and check for corrupt files e.t.c.

If this is not possible then you will have to re install windows most likely. Do you know how to do these two things?

What should I use for the virus scan once I get into safe mode?

I've never been in safe mode, so no.  If you could tell me/send me a link to video explaining it I'd be able to no problem.

What kind of motherboard do you have?

And just use whatever you had before. Bit Defender is great, personally I use AVG but most hate it.

/e to get into safe mode spam f8 on boot

I have no idea what it is, it's a prebuilt dell.

And in safe mode you have access to download programs and run them?

I found this as a possible fix to the problem, should I give it a try?

ya you can try that, but you'll have to change it once you boot into safe mode.

After the BIOS splash screen spam F8 and you should be able to boot into safe mode or safe mode with networking.
