I have a secondary system that I am going to be taking to college with me in the fall pretty much entirely for gaming. I was thinking about upgrading it and I was wondering if it is worth the cost. Also, how much of a benefit I would get from this upgrade? The upgrade would be from a Core 2 Quad Q6600 to a Core-i5 3570(non-K). As for pricing, I would have to pay the price of a Z97 motherboard and a i5-4690K (whenever it comes out). This is because the new parts would go in my main system, and I would take my main system's parts. Either way, the system will have a GTX 760.

See how well it performs compared to your main rig before you consider upgrading from that Core 2 Quad.

Well I already know that it takes more than 50% of my CPU power to watch a YouTube video, and when I am installing a game and watching YouTube, it hits 100%, so I have to stop watching YouTube. I haven't been able to test gaming performance because the 760 is still in my other system (I am getting another card for that system tomorrow), but gaming on the old GPU in this system, the CPU usage was very high.

That amount of CPU usage seems abnormally high for just watching a Youtube video, if it is an old install of Windows 7 I would start fresh.

I just installed it on Wednesday. It is a fairly old CPU, but I really wanted to get another year out of it and wait for Broadwell.

EDIT: The CPU usage while watching a YouTube video is between 75% and 90%.

Since you said it was 50% last time you obviously must have something eating up a lot of CPU cycles in the background. Core2Quads aren't that bad, I would look into what else is running (could be Windows Updates installing silently etc.)
