Help Deciding GPU.

Brokkoli
Go to solution Solved by Catzzye,

Out of those three, I'd recommend going with 4060, it's not a bad price all things considered.

As you say if you don't game too much it would be more than enough, and if you do end up gaming in the future it should handle everything for a while now (tho depends a bit on the rest of the system).

Good luck!

Hello People,

(for the sake of simplicity, I'll list the cost in NOK, but assume 10NOK = 1USD)

Which GPU would you suggest?

   1. Asus GeForce RTX 3060 Dual - 3889 NOK

   2. MSI GeForce RTX 4060 Ventus - 3790 NOK [ON SALE]

   3. Radeon RX 6700 XT Fighter - 4595 NOK

   4. any other ideas? I would prefer not to spend too much, as I am both a student, and don't game all that much...

PS:

- PSU is 850W

- max length is 300mm due to Case

Thank you for any help or suggestions 🙂

Admittedly I realized through writing this how obvious the choice is...

model?

6700 XT is better but more expensive, the only worth for it is the VRAM,

It's a Corsair RM850e. Probably not the highest specs. But a solid 300w above what I realistically need atm.

I did 🙂  Placed an order for one ~5 hours ago, with ETA this monday the 8th.

that's going to be very solid, with RM850e threre's plenty of PSU headroom for 4060

Not to make you doubt the decision, but there are some precautions to be made with the 4060..

1. It is stuck with 8GB of VRAM which is already causing problems in newer games at 1440p

2. It is wired to use only 8 PCIE lanes. If your motherboard does not support PCIE gen 4, you are capped at PCIEx8 gen 3

That said, the 4060 is nice for consuming very little power and running extremely cool. I don't know the rest of your system specs or what resolution you play at. It is never bad to spend within your means

Just to answer your comments:

1. Everything I currently play works fine running off my R7 5700G. If it turns out to be a problem down the line, additional investment would be needed anyhow...

2. I believe it does, its a MSI b500 board.

That is part of the reason I chose the card, to be honest + the discount helped. Given the amount of time I currently devote to videogames, a higher investment was neither needed or reasonable.

Alright. The GPU has been mounted and is recieving power. My monitor however does not seem to pick up the pc when connecting it through hdmi on the GPU itself, any clue as to why this is?

try reseating the GPU? Change your pcie lane width to gen 3 manually in bios and enable above 4g decoding and rebar in bios (but I'd do this after you get a display from the GPU)

regardless of if the mobo will support gen 4 it  will only be at gen 3 since the 5700g only supports up to pcie 3

Nevermind, it fixed itself after a restart. Seemed the system just needed to get used to the new part.

How do you do the bios thing? I'm not used enough to that yet to do it comfortably. I've procrastinated doing the bios properly until I got a GPU.

I'd also like to update my fan-curves. I feel they're a bit loud, and slightly overkill ...

are your fans connected to the motherboard or a controller?

spam DEL or F2 after restarting the PC to get into bios

you don't have to enable rebar or 4g decoding, but it could improve performance. Ignore the pcie gen 3 thing I said earlier if the GPU is working now

4G decoding and Rebar should be found in advanced section

I have 6 fans, all are connected in pairs to the 3 fan connectors on the MOBO itself.

Alright, although I was more asking in terms of which settings to change : )

you'll have to go into BIOS and go to the H/W monitor and click on the fan curve option to edit them (should be clear from there)

all you need to change is 4G decoding to turn that on, rebar if it's there, the fan curve settings and possibly XMP if you haven't done already (This should be in advanced or in the overclocking section)
