Decent metal heatsinks with thermal pads work, but they can also create heat traps if they're poorly designed and/or poorly fitted. Plastic ones ARE a heat trap.

 

RGB ones can cause overheating and may have problems syncing with RGB software, but I'm sure some of them work fine.

 

My recommendation would be: don't.
