I just recently upgraded a friend’s computer to an Intel i5-14500 CPU with a new NVMe drive and DDR5 memory, salvaging the old drive from the computer. I was planning on copying the partition over to the new drive but when I got every put into the chassis I could see the old drive but it wasn’t wanting to boot. I used an install disk to see what was happening and attempted to CHKDSK the old drive. It’s an old intel drive and was telling me it couldn’t write from the disk. I’m guessing that the old drive is locked to the old hardware but just wanting to confirm

sounds like the old disk and partition is MBR and you installed windows 11 .. MBR will not be bootable for UEFI booting windows. but you can access it from windows.

when swapping out mainboard cpu drive and memory i would recommend reinstalling anyway..

It was a windows 10 install, and really the only thing I want off that old drive is the windows key if that’s even possible

if that windows install was connected to a microsoft account you should find it under your user on www.microsoft.com and be able to reset it to current installation.
