GPU running at different bus interfaces

Reposting since my last thread didn't get much traction, but tl:dr - GPU is running at multiple different bus interfaces for seemingly no reason?

I've seen 4 different bus interfaces and the only way to change the bus interface is by restarting/shutting down the PC

Here's the 4 combinations I've seen:

16x 3.0

1x 4.0

2x 4.0

16x 1.1

16x 4.0 (which should be the normal one)

I don't believe this is GPU-Z being wrong, because whenever it does run at lower bus interfaces I do notice really big FPS drops and microstutters.

I have tried reseating and cleaning the golden pins on the GPU multiple times, but to no avail.

Also checked for bent pins in the CPU socket, but everything looks normal there too.

Don't really know how to fix this and not sure which component to RMA if there is no fix to this.

Edit: clicking the "?" to open up the graphic also doesn't change the bus interface.

It's for power saving purposes.

Under the bus interface it first give you the physical link speed, and then the current operating speed.

i.e. in your last screenshot your GPU is connected via Gen 4 x16 physical, but since you aren't using the GPU for much it dialed it down to Gen 1.1 x16 operating speed. Stress your GPU and you'll see the bus speed reach the physical limit.

I've checked the bus speed whilst I'm ingame and it'll still be sitting at x2 or x1 even after hitting the refresh button at the top.

Unless I'm misunderstanding how GPU-Z works

Uhhh what? How? So much confusion.

But why?

You're at home using normal electricity for everyday use.

If you're not using for hours just turn off your pc or is people incapable to do that.

For slow hardware I'd get it but computers boots up in seconds with decent hardware with ssd ofc.

I bet this will cause some issues to some users.

I'm jank tinkerer if it works then it works.

Regardless of compatibility 🐧🖖

Restart program? Maybe.

It does this intentionally depending on use.

There is a little question mark next to the bus speed which explains why.

Should the program not update it to x16 whenever the bus speed does increase?

For example if I'm running a game and I open up GPU-Z but it still keeps showing a severely decreased speed to the supposed "supported" speed

It probably should, not certain if it does live updates or not as I don’t usually stare at a gpu-z screen while doing anything else GPU intensive.

If you were actually running a 4080 super at x16 1.1 you’d know immediately running at 1/16th of the bandwidth of 4.0

I've noticed massive changes in FPS which usually prompts me to check GPU-Z and temps for both GPU and CPU.

Temps are always very low, but the bus speed seems to be the culprit.

My FPS pretty much never drops, so whenever my FPS is suddenly 90-150 FPS lower than my usual FPS, that's when I get a little confused
