Hey Guys so I recently bought an upgrade kit from a local retailer:
AMD RYZEN 5 PRO 4650G B450M-A PRO MAX 32GB RGB 3600MHz Upgrade Kit - MSI B450M-A PRO MAX ProSeries Motherboard + AMD RYZEN 5 PRO 4650G 11MB Game Cache Up to 4.2GHz CPU (OEM) + KLEVV CRAS XR RGB 32GB (2 x 16GB) 3600MHz DDR4 Desktop Memory + 3 Years Local Warranty

I am having issues with random restarts. When googling the cpu it looks like the cpu only supports up to 3200 speed memory. When I turn XMP off the random restarts seem to stop.

Is my logic sound in saying that my memory being 3600 (CL18) speed is not compatible with my cpu? (Not sure why they sell it as an upgrade kit then)

Would I be able to run the memory at 3200 speed cl16 as some online places say that the performance should be the same?

Sorry I am a bit of a noob. My psu is 500w and I am running a GTX 1080 Gigabyte GPU

Regards

It should be compatible regardless unless you got unlucky with some janky silicon on your Memory controller, but if that is the case yeah, 3200CL16 should be very similar performance

Thank you TatamiMatt, I will go try it tonight 🙂  I am thinking it must be that because I am still in the process of reinstalling everything as I am starting with a fresh windows 11 install, but had random restarts every 5 to 20 minutes. Last night I switched off XMP and it has not done a random restart since. I will try to run 3200 and post my findings. Thanks again!

No worries, let us know how it goes! You might also be able to change all the other timings to be a little tighter too to get closer again to the performance

Id return it and get a different kit that doesnt use a 4000 apu cause of the quartered cache, even if you run it at 1:1 fclk (4400-4600 ddr4 for renoir) that still wont be able to make up for the 8mb of cache compared to the 32mb youd get on a 3600(x)

If you for some reason want to keep that kit then tune the rams to 4400 so it wont perform too poorly when compared to a 3600(x)

I dont think they will let me return it as I bought this back in december but just never got around to building it, finally found some time this past weekend and now experiencing the issues.  I am a bit confused will 4400 work if my dimms are 3600 CL18? Also I believe that it is actually the 3600 speed that is causing the restarts because when running at stock 2666 it seems to run fine. I will go do some more testing and verify this. Does anyone know of a way to verify that it is indeed the ram causing the restarts? Like is there some sort of crash log a person can go look at maybe? Thanks for the help 🙂

Binning doesnt matter except for inconsistent ics, theres a reason why some cheap oem 2133-2666 can clock so high (4000+) whilst others struggle to go past 3200 or 3600

You can send a thaiphoon burner screenshot to identify ram ics, theyre likely gonna be something capable of 4400+

Also xmp not working counts as faulty so you may be able to return it cause of that

Thank you for this, I did not realise this counts as a fault, I will go gather more info tonight and let you know what I find, I think if it is the case then I will try to return it. 🙂

Hi there, Just wanted to update you. I eventually got my computer running stable. I tried to run 3200 CL16, but this just made my computer screen go black and I had to clear the cmos. II then selected my xmp profile again (18-22-22-42 or something like that) and changed the speed down to 3533. This made my pc run stable and I ran prime 95 for an hour just to confirm this. I think My cpu might just not be strong enough to handle the 3600.
