What am i looking for?

hi there, im new here.
a many years ago my dad converted old VHS tapes (around 30) to .avi files.
each one is about 90 minutes long yet each file is around 20Gb.
where can i look for help with reducing the size of those file?
why would they be so large to begin with? 
where can i find the pro's to help me.

Handbrake is a good start. Feed it a source file, set a resolution, pick and encoder and quality settings and let it rip. Plenty of tutorials out there to help get you started.

The code used was likely old and inefficient, but standard for the time depending on when this was done.

didn't even know LTT had a discord server (i mean of course it has one - duh )
