NVME SSD (with CFexpress adapter and Reader) isn't automatically assigned a drive letter

idrxml

I have a 2230 m.2 type B ssd that is put into a cfexpress type B adapter, and put into a Sandisk CFexpress card reader (SDDR-F451), that won't open up.

I have checked into disk management that windows actually recognize the disk, but just won't automatically assigned a drive letter. If I were to manually assigned a letter, I can open it just fine and read the files.

The card read and write just fine with my camera. I have an actual CFexpress type B from Lexar that is read and mount just fine with the same Sandisk reader.

if I were to connect my camera to my computer directly, both cards are mounted just fine.

Is there a way to fix this? as far as I know the nvme to cfexpress adapter is just a 'dumb' adapter as both share the same nvme protocol.

the nvme alone has been put into an usb c enclosure before that and it was mounted just fine.

also, is there a way to test this card completely? I'm afraid it might corrupt out of nowhere.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Windows does this sometimes. Usually once you assign one manually it'll keep using it afterwards though.

It won't keep it sadly. I have to mount it manually each time

I found a solution on a comment of a reddit post about camera.

The commenter said that this is a problem because the NVME has been initialized with windows before (used with windows OS as storage) and formatting it is not enough. They found that this is a problem exclusive to windows (Linux and Mac apparently don't have issues) and used SSD and not new ones.

They listed out these steps that I followed and it has been successful (Text below copied as is) :

"1. Open CMD prompt in windows

2. Enter "diskpart"

3. "List disk"

4. Then "select disk 1" or whatever number the card is (make sure you select the right disk, it will delete everything on the card on the next step)

"clean"

Now format card in camera and Windows will be able to see it."

So thank you everyone!
