I have 2 sticks of "Corsair Vengeance "LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 3200MHz C16, Black" in my systems running xmp 2666mHz on a Asus B-360 board and have two sticks of "Hynix DDR4 2400MHz 8GB (HMA81GU6AFR8N-UH)" and wondered if I could put them in my system since B-360 is block to 2666 mHz anyway or if it's an overal bad idea to lower my speed or if it would even function? I am not sure what timings there are on the slower ram either.

It might work, but the RAM will run at the speed of the slowest module, and there's a chance that it won't run stable or at all.

But it usually doesn't hurt anything to just try it.

If it doesn't work try without any XMP profile.

If that doesn't work either....well... bad luck

 

If it works with or without XMP I would still do a memtest just in case.

Some motherboards can overclock ram automatically with the XMP setting, it is not common but I have seen things like a 1333 kit of DDR3 get bumped up to 1600, 2400 get bumped up to 2666 etc. Most likely the ram will all run at 2400, but you should try it out and see if you can set the ram to all run at 2666

I think the idea is, if you have 2x4GB sticks of RAM its better to have 4x4GB sticks of RAM than try to run off just the 8GB for better speed

 

But, you could also just buy 2x8GB and get the best of both worlds, so the RAM comment isnt exactly accurate for the majority of scenarios
