My current server is a R5 2600, 16GB of RAM, no GPU. It's going great. My current desktop is a R5 5600 and a 6700XT.

I want to start doing PS3 and below emulation on it, passthrough a GPU to a Win 10 VM, and connecting it to my 4K TV via HDMI. However, my CPU is likely not going to be good enough. And I have been very frustrated with trying to find a cheap used GPU here in Ontario, so I figured, just buy a new GPU for $500, which case I would need to upgrade my sever PSU from a CX 550W to an 850W ($120 I see is the cheapest A tier available).

However... for game emulation, it's more CPU intensive than GPU. Does it make more sense to use that $620 to buy a Core i5 12600K + b760 + 16GB of DDR4 RAM for $400 (Or some combo of this CPU + Mobo for $300-$350 once a sale comes up), plus keep trying to find a cheap GPU for $100? While I was planning on skipping DDR5 completely, I know the 12600K is compatible with DDR5. So some future upgrade path there? And I get more physical cores and threads than my R5 2600 or R5 5600.

My desktop runs PS2 games really well via emulation at 4k resolution. Haven't tried ps3 games, but looking at the cpu tier list, it likely won't be as good.

I've heard that PS3 emulators are benefited from single-threaded performance & AVX-512 instruction sets. For the Team Blue side, only 11th Gen & early 12th Gen Core processors have AVX-512 support, while the whole Ryzen 7000 series have support for it, and are recommended over Team Blue.

The followings can be referred to for making decisions:

  • Processor: Ryzen 7600 ($199)
  • Cooler: Stock
  • Motherboard: MSI A620M-E ($75)
  • RAM: Crucial DDR5-4800 16GB kit ($48)
  • GPU: Integrated Raedon 610M
