For FSR you don't touch the resolution in game, leave it at native. Enable FSR and set a mode. Quality, Balanced, or Performance. Each will render the game at a lower resolution then upscale it.

For games that don't support FSR, you can use RSR. Using that it will need to be enabled in Adrenaline then it includes a nice little step by step guide for how to make sure its being used in game.

so i have a native 1440p ultrawide and i want to turn it down to 1080p. if you do the math, 21:9 should make it 2520x1080p, but all the native 1080p uw monitors are 2560x1080. which is the correct resolution for UWFHD?

Do you not have FSR/DLSS as an option? Manually changing the res is going to look like crap.

yea well I don't right now, but I am going to order a rx6600 from gigabyte today so that will. although i thought a significant increase like 1080-> 1440p did not look good and those should only be used like 10% increase. also, does it work for ultrawide?

Looks like it's just for marketing as most of the UW resolutions are not actually exactly 21:9:

^^^ especially changing to a resolution that is not exactly 1/2 or 2x the native res, it'll often look really bleary. If you have high enough ppi it won't (I can run 1440p on my 4K 27" panel and it won't look too terrible) but a 1440p ultrawide likely isn't sharp enough.

I'm not totally following what you're asking here.
