Hello,

I recently got a new GPU 4070 Ti and was planning to install it into my existing PC. Before doing so I figured since the min requirement PSU for that GPU is 750w (which is what I currently have) I would purchase a new PSU to hopefully give myself a better threshold and power management. Unfortunately things did not go as planned.

Current PC:

  • Tuf Gaming X570-PLUS (WI-FI)
  • AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-Core Processor
  • G.Skill DDR4 8gb Ram (X2)
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6gb
  • EVGA 750w Bronze Power Supply

  • New PSU Corsair RM1000x(have not installed but want to)
  • New GPU 4070 Ti (have not installed but want to)

Everything works in this configuration from initial installation. No overclocking has been done. Now on to the issue, I fully disconnected the 750w PSU and connected the new PSU RM1000x back up just as it was removed and ran into an issue. Still using all the same original parts just with the 1000w PSU I have MB power and GPU power (1060) but when I go to hit the power button i get a flash of everything as if it turn on for one second then turns off again. Then without cutting the power off I try to hit the power button again nothing happens. I have also Cycled the power switch on the PSU (750w) and tried it again and same thing.

Thing I have done:

  • Checked the 24 pin
  • Checked the 8 pin CPU connector
  • Checked to make sure i have the correct cables
  • Used out of the box original cables
  • Tested the PSU and confirmed it is working correctly
  • Tried booting without GPU (1060)
  • Re-seated Ram
  • Re-Seated CPU
  • Reset Bios to Default

I know the MB is still working fine because once I reinstalled the 750w PSU everything boots and works just as it has been.

Please help I'm running out of ideas and the GPU was a gift from my Girl and she is questioning why I haven't installed it yet. (don't want her thinking I don't appreciate it.)

The old PSU and the new PSU do not use the same cables. Are you using the proper cables?

Understandable, I was not using the same cables due to the fact that the 750w has built in cabling and the 1000w is modular. When using the new PSU on my existing set up I used all the cables that were supplied in the box. Also i have confirmed that all the cables and PSU are in working condition with a PSU tester.

so the machine starts and runs fine without the power supply in the case but still connected?

NO, if you go back and read my original post, the new PSU is confirmed working perfectly fine until I connect it to the existing computer that I have now. Simple stated I swapped my old 750w for the new 1000w and now the MB and GPU have power but every time I try to boot the computer it flashes on for one sec and then does nothing while still powering the MB and GPU. When I switch back to the old 750w PSU everything boots perfectly fine no issues. Again I have confirmed that the new PSU is working per a PSU tester, but once it is installed my PC runes into an unknown issue I am trying to figure out.

ok so did you want to try it outside the case to make sure it's not a grounding issue or not.

Yes, I have tried that as well. When it didn't work the first time i pulled it out replaced the 750w booted the computer shut it down removed the 750w and connected the 1000w while out of the case and it didn't boot. Currently the 750 is out of the case while connected and working just fine.

A PSU can have a defect so that it works fine under light load (psu tester) but has issues under heavy load (and starting a PC is considered heavy).

Check that your 24-pin and 8-pin sit coreectly.

alright well from your testing i'd say you can return it and try a different power supply then

I have done that this is the exchanged power supply that's why I'm so stumped. And the PSU is confirmed working so I'm wondering if there is some kind of breaker in it or something that wont let it actually power my computer. As in there isn't enough power draw from my pc to allow it to come on or something.

The issue is this is the second PSU i thought that at first so i took it back and exchanged it and well the second one is doing the same thing as the first one so im wondering if maybe my MB has a limiter on it or something that is preventing the PSU from delivering full power.

Rebuild everything outside the case. Retest.
