Got a new gpu (a gigabyte rtx 3070), and decided to put it in a pre-build, thinking I can just deal with the bottleneck. However what I forgot to realise is that it has a really cheap 400w psu, but I didnt notice this as it was working fine, and I installed all the drivers. Then I decided to run 3dmark to test out the new gpu and laugh at the bottleneck (a literal i5-2500 with an rtx 3070), and my computer shut itself off in the middle of it. I was quite confused and scared, so I opened up my computer to see if any connections were loose or anything, when to my horror I saw a 400w 80+ bronze psu powering a 3070. Is my gpu screwed or can I whack a 1030 in there or do I need a new psu?

(There are lights indicating psu power faults on both 8pin connectors on both gpu bios modes) (and also I dont have warranty)

400w is very much below spec for a 3070. What is the brand and the model of the PSU? If it's one of those Dell PCs then you have no chance. If it's a regular PC then you can just buy a new PSU, like a good 650w.

its a gamemax gp-400a with an 80+ bronze rating

Unplug the power cord and let it sit for a couple minutes. Then replug it. You tripped the overcurrent protection. It will stay tripped until you power cycle the psu.

Put the old gpu in until you can replace the psu.

Tried that, didnt work. I think I completely annihilated my psu as my gpu is still indicating no power, but somehow lights come on and fans spin to life. Also the mobo and gpu dont post.

Could be more than the psu. Hope it didn’t take out anything else with it. If you get no joy with a new psu, I’d take it to a shop to get the components tested.

Alright. But if I do get a new psu, and plug broken parts into it, could it affect other working parts or the new psu itself? Or should I test the parts first?

update: got a new psu, plugged it in, and literally nothing posts.

That’s not good, you might have broke any number of parts though. But first, make sure everything is installed correctly (RAM, GPU, PSU cords, and maybe even the CPU). Then take the parts to a shop that and/will test them or test them yourself. It is a possibility that the PSU was DOA  (but it is possible). The mobo might have been fried. Try to run the system with just the required parts. And if none of these work something in the system is dead. Good luck!

I tried a new mobo and new ram, however now the gpu dosen't even indicate power faults and dosen't display anything. So I used intergrated graphics instead for a while but after about 3 shut downs and power ons, the computer didn't post at all. The cpu and psu work fine however I'm not sure about the ram but I have reseated it multiple times. I've also reseated the cpu a few times and it heats up when I plug everything in. Haven't been to a shop but I don't really know any places close to me.

I can’t really help with finding a shop, but if you check for a  Microcenter near you and there is on go there. The only part that I can think of being broken now is the cpu. It is possible that the cpu got too much power and something in there fried. Try to find the cheapest cpu that fits the socket or borrow one. We are kind of running out of options so let’s hope this fixes it.

Sounds like your psu blew up and took the rest of the stuff with it.  When you buy a cheap prebuilt, this is what you get.  Return everything you can return, and start completely over and stop trying to re-use sus parts because all you did here was waste your time, and damage other new components because you don't know what you're doing.

I'll probably just try get a new cpu then as I live in England and there's no micro centres here; cheers for the advice though
