I just used testdisk to get a bunch of file back from a formatted SD card but the videos are coming out black with the occasional buggy sound. This has happened to all the video files so far unfortunately :C

Is there any way to restore them?

They may just be missing some header information. Try opening them in VLC and see if they work there. Let us know if that works.
If it does, than we can move on to actually repairing them.

Ok yeah, the videos still show the same result when opened using VLC.

Without analyzing the files, I would guess that the data is lost, or you'll need specialized tools to get the information back.

Are the files sized like the originals? Or do they appear to be too small for video files?

Well, maybe the raw data is still there. I would try something like this video in that case.

so ive been following the video and felt like i was doing something wrong and it turns out that the ffmpeg 6.1 free download doesn't download into a zip file and all i got from downloading was a file named "ffmpeg-6.1-full_build.7z" and the command propmt isn't proceeding further as it's trying to find a file named "ffmpeg.exe"

Gotta use 7-Zip to extract it into a normal folder. Than you should be able to continue.

ok so here are the first two results:

1: was basically a complete flop, i opened it in vlc and only got audio but is definitely better than buzzing
2: very promising results; had the screen mostly green with some glitching effect that sometimes flashes video but it's only a single frame, audio on the other hand was way more clear than the 1st video attempt but was still buggy as it kept repeating itself a second time

i wonder if i use a different working mp4 file as a reference for the analysis which would make it better, i'll post results to you as soon as i do this

also thanks for the all the help you have given me, definitely wouldn't be at this stage without you ❤️

You're welcome, but you're the one doing all the work 😁

Yes. Another thing you migh consider is trying some other programs that recover deleted files. They may go about it a little differently and you may get some better files. Recuva  comes to mind, but there are a gazillion of those types of programs. I would guess they will all recover the exact same files, but who knows.

One quick way to check if two recovery programs recover the exact same data is to open PowerShell and run

Get-FileHash filename

If the hashes of two files match, they are exactly the same. Might save you some work, but I'm guessing no two programs will recover the files exactly the same way.

Also, if depending on what happened after the files were deleted from the SD Card, the data could already be lost forever (without paying for professional data recovery.) For example, if data was written to the SD card after the files were deleted, there's a good chance that some of that data overwrote parts of the files you're trying to recover.

You could also try a program like this: Repair Corrupted Video Files from the SD Card Easily [2023] (wondershare.com)

Most of those programs have free trials to see if they actually work. They might be able to recover more than the FFMpeg method (although I'd think that's a pretty good way to try)
