Budget (including currency): $400

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming

Other details: Current system is X570 Aorus Xtreme running a Ryzen 9 3950X, 7900XTX, 32 GB RAM, 2 - 1tb PCIe 4.0 drives, 1200 Watt PS

I got a screaming deal from a buddy when I bought this system earlier this year ($350) as he just bought himself a brand-new rig (it came with a 1080TI). I haven't put any money into PC gaming in years, and this was the nudge I clearly needed. It didn't take me long at all to dust off my STEAM account and instantly enjoy PC gaming again. I quickly pushed the 1080TI to its limits. As such I upgraded a few weeks ago to the 7900XTX, which has proven to be a great upgrade for 4k gaming.

My question is simple, should I grab a 5800X3D and drop it in? Is it going to be worth it for gaming at 4k?

If so, should I also switch to an air cooler at the same time? I'm asking this for one reason, the existing AIO Corsair cooler is likely 4-5 years old now. I've heard these have a limited lifespan. No idea what condition it is in. It does keep the 3950X temperatures under fantastic control. I would hate to risk a leak with the money I'm investing in the rig. I just don't know how much of a risk there is?

Thank you!

If you have the money for a 5800X3D and a decent cooler as well, then yes. If not, then no. I would then probably sell the cooler you have now on Ebay or Marketpalce for some quick cash.

Have you tried turning it off and on again? Maybe Restart it?

AIO leaking is extremely rare!  The more common faults is a dead pump or a clogged loop.

You should see a decent FPS uplift even at 4k by moving to the 5800X3D over the 3950X in terms of gaming performance.  Maybe not the biggest difference in terms of the highest FPS but the 1% lows and 01% lows should definitely improve ( microstutter ).

5800X3D can easily be cooled with the Peerless Assassin SE 120 unless you want to use your AIO of course.

Is there any maintenance that can be done on the AIO unit? or are they generally left alone until death? Does potential maintenance leave me more open to a leak?

It depends on the AIO but 95% of all AIO's ( All-in-Ones ) are closed loops that can't be serviced. One can open the pump housing and replace the pump etc but that requires parts and knowhow, I have never heard of anyone actually doing this either.

Opening it up definitely increases the risk of leaks as you might not get all the gaskets correct to do a perfect seal.

If I keep the AIO what is the normal risk at end of life? pump stops/loop clogs and system shuts down when it overheats?
