I`m very Confused........Help needed.

I have a 4x 3.5" hard drives inside a external enclosures. That has its own power supplies of 12v and a usb cable to plug into you pc usb ports right?

Now, im reading reviews that you need a powered usb hub if you want to use multiple hard drives, or multiple devices........"Why"

I can understand flash drives sd cards dosent need a powered usb hub but a portable cd rom drive or a external audio interface needs it.

But my issue is. why do people say i need a powered usb ports to use my 4x active hard drive enclosures but it has its own power from the mains plug sockets.

Do i really need a powered usb port or a non powered usb hub guys.

regards Tel

Welcome to the Forums!

You don't need a powered hub if you've got enclosures that provide their own power. You would need one if you had 2.5" enclosures that draw power from the USB port, but that's not your use case.

They don't mean people like you need a powered hub (your HDDs are powered by the enclosure).

They mean people using lots of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Toshiba-Partner-Portable-External-Compatible/dp/B0BGXWT3GL/ref=sr_1_3?c=ts&keywords=External+Hard+Drives&qid=1700848436&s=computers&sr=1-3&ts_id=430544031 or similar will need a powered hub (cause these draw power from their usb port).

Common build advice:

1) Buy the cheapest (well reviewed) motherboard that has the features you need. Paying more typically only gets you features you won’t use. 2) only get as much RAM as you need, getting more won’t (typically) make your PC faster. 3) While I recommend getting an NVMe drive, you don’t need to splurge for an expensive drive with DRam cache, DRamless drives are fine for gamers. 4) paying for looks is fine, just don’t break the bank. 5) Tower coolers are usually good enough, unless you go top tier Intel or plan on OCing. 6) OCing is a dead meme, you probably shouldn’t bother. 7) "Bottlenecks" rarely matter and "Future-proofing" is a myth. 8) AIOs don't noticeably improve performance past 240mm and don't improve at all past 360mm. 9) RTFM.
