PC Parts Help

Budget (including currency): around $1200 (CAD)

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: High FPS in competitive games and high graphics in single player games.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Looking to upgrade my current build, re-using as much as possible. Looks/RGB doesn't matter to me, just performance. I have a 1440p 165hz monitor and would like to be able to play most games at around 180fps or above at native resolution.

My build:

MB: Gigabyte B360 HD3 w/ DDR4-2666

CPU: Intel i5 8600k

RAM: Vengeance 2x8GB DDR4 2400MHz

GPU: EVGA GTX 1060 6GB

CASE: Cooler Master Masterbox 5 Lite

PSU: MasterWatt Lite 600W

CPU Cooler: MasterLiquid Lite 120 AIO

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hello. I would like to help. I have been building PCs for over 30 years. I have some good news and some bad news. Lets start with the bad news first.

I hate to have to say this but your current PC Parts are too old to be reused. The whole system is out of date by about 10 years. Anything current/recent Game will struggle really bad because of the CPU, MB, & RAM that you have. This PC will do really well for most Emulators but any current AAA Game will probably only get you around 20-30 FPS if that. It would be impossible to upgrade a few things with you base platform. With the B360 I would not upgrade the CPU as the Chipset would not handle anything more than the current 8600K. With the RAM you are limited to 2666MHz, current DDR4 RAM is set at 3600MHz and your MB will not support that. So a new Motherboard is needed.

Now the good news. Since a new MB is needed then you might as well just into the current times and get a platform that will last another 5-10 years. With your budget this is entirely possible. I have a build list for you that will allow you to play any game at really high Frame Rates. It has a Ryzen Base platform.

The Ryzen 5 5500. Along with a MSI B550 Gaming Gen3 Motherboard. 32GB of fast 3200MHz DDR4 RAM. 1TB of M.2 Storage, no more old Spinning Hard Drives. GPU is the Acer Predator Intel ARC A770 16GB. I know Intel GPUs got a bad Rep when they first came out but they have improved so much since then. The Case is a Zalman S2 that has Full Mesh Front and Top Panels. Mesh is really needed these days to help Cool all the parts. To help with the Cooling I added a Aftermarket CPU Cooler and an extra Fan Pack for the Case. You would add another Fan to the Front of the Case and 2 more to the Top of the Case. For the PSU I have a MSI MAG ATX 3.0/PCIe 5.0 750w PSU. It has all the latest components to make sure that no Power Spikes happen that might damage the PC.

If you have any questions please let me know. I can be reached here or I can be reached much quicker on Discord. Here is my Discord: Wizardsnapper#2772
