Creating a single USB drive for Win8.1 installation for BOTH Legacy and UEFI systems

EDIT:
I have "worked around" this problem by using Rufus to create a UEFI-only installation USB. Guess I'll have to rely on having 2 USBs instead of one. Well, not too bad considering I have more than enough USB sticks.

Thanks everyone for your input!

Dear LTT forumers,

I am struggling to create a bootable USB drive for the installation of Win8.1.

"Wait a minute, Win8.1 is terrible and receives no support, don't install it!" - Thanks for worrying, but I have reasons which I can not disclose due to an NDA.

I need to be able to install W8.1 on both UEFI and Legacy systems. Currently, I am struggling with creating it properly.

I have been following this video, but my USB does not boot into UEFI mode, only in legacy.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks a lot! ❤️

You can boot from a legacy drive on a UEFI system. Why not just create a MBR/legacy boot drive that will work with legacy and UEFI systems

I would love to do that - maybe my USBs are not MBR. I will try changing that and trying an installation again. Thanks!

When I create a Windows 10 drive using the Windows Media Creation tool, the drive is bootable in both modes. No idea how far back you can go with that.

I tried making an installation USB using Rufus now, still no luck booting into it on a Toshiba Satellite C50A. My Win10 USB worked flawlessly, but I'd really need to get Win8 running on the device.

That is what I suggest, rufus, as it specifically has settings for mbr and uefi mode.

What are you testing?  Is it performance, program compatibility, because I believe Microsoft quit supporting it in somewhere around 2014 or 2015, so what could it be?

Windows 11 will just force business to "recycle" "obscolete" hardware.  Microsoft definitely isn't bothered by this at all, and seems to want hardware produced just a few years ago to be considered obsolete.  They have also not shown any interest nor has any other company in a similar financial position, to help increase tech recycling whatsoever.  Windows 12 might be cloud-based and be a monthly or yearly fee.

NoScript or EFF's privacy badger addons can block many scripts and websites that would load and track you, possibly halving page load time!

F-droid is a place to install open-source software for android, Antennapod, RethinkDNS, Fennec which is Firefox with about:config, lots of performance and other changes available, mozilla KB has a huge database of what most of the settings do.  Most software in the repository only requires Android 5 and 6!

I recommend firewall apps (blocks apps) and dns filters (redirect all dns requests on android, to your choice of dns, even if overridden).  RethinkDNS is my pick and I set it to use pi-hole, installed inside Ubuntu/Debian, which is inside Virtualbox, until I go to a website, nothing at all connects to any other server.  I also use NextDNS.io to do the same when away from home wi-fi or even cellular!  I can even tether from cellular to any device sharing via wi-fi, and block anything with dns set to NextDNS, regardless if the device allows changing dns.  This style of network filtration is being overridden by software updates on some devices, forcing a backup dns provuder, such as google dns, when built in dns requests are not connecting.  Without a complete firewall setup, dns redirection itself is no longer always effective.
