I purchased a used Asus Strix 5700 xt and it looks great, but there is a problem. Ive spent my entire evening since it got to my door trying to get it to work properly. The issue is that only the first displayport seems to function the way it should. The HDMI will ONLY function during post, in the bios, and loading into windows for some reason. This only occurs if a displayport monitor is also plugged in. Otherwise nothing appears on the HDMI monitor at all. The moment the login screen for windows appears, the HDMI signal goes black. Some TVs and monitors flicker a little and some do nothing. Oddly, windows, amd's adrenaline software, and steam's hardware survey all detect both the DP and the HDMI screens and the PC behaves like the HDMI is functional with full stat readouts in display settings but nothing appears. I also couldn't get the other two dp inputs to function at all. When I would unplug from the first dp and do a hotswap with another dp, the monitor would not show a signal again until I restarted the PC and plugged the displayport cable back into the first port. If I simply unplugged that dp from the first port and plugged it back in to the same first port, it would function just fine

I did DDU, tried multiple cables and monitors, tried switching the bios switch on the GPU, refreshing my drivers multiple times, updated my motherboard bios, and I even went so far as to reinstall windows and the behavior didn't change at all. The seller says they only ever used the first displayport and never used multiple screens so they never noticed the issue. All the port covers are missing though so im not entirely sure I can believe them. I specifically got this GPU to put in my living room PC that my Fiancé and I use like a console to play casual games and run streamers because our 4k smart TV's OS is terrible, so this issue basically defeats the purpose of the purchase for me, and I couldn't in good conscience sell it in a build to someone else unknowingly. There's got to be something I'm missing here. Any ideas?

Ps: I've done a ton of googling this evening and I haven't been able to find something that seems like my issue. The closest I found's solution was reinstalling windows, so that's why I tried that.

Did you try adjusting the refresh rate for the DP monitor?

I believe so. I know I definitely adjusted the HDMI monitor's refresh rate multiple times so I must've done the same to the DP at some point. I'll try that though just in case. The HDMI doesn't seem to appear even when it's the only monitor plugged in also, it only functions on boot and bios.

Ask the seller for your money back.

I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. 😉 I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give.

My phone's auto-correct is named Otto Rong.🤪😂

So do you think there's no fixing this? It seems to operate great with just the DP and a single screen but I haven't actually run any benchmarks or gamed on it yet. I have 30 days to request a return/refund (which I've never done on eBay before) so I'm hoping I can fix it first

Do you want to pay an expert to fix it? It'll probably cost more than it's worth. Personally, I would send it back with ebay's help.

Definitely not. I'm more of a figure out how to do it myself kind of person. But if I can't figure it out in the next day or so, I'll attempt to get my money back/return it.

I've now spent about 20 hours in the past two days trying to figure this out. Still haven't found a solution to this. The PC runs great! Better than my main rig, but it can only run one display and it seems like it's just the first displayport. I can boot into windows with the other displayport but after a few minutes they also black screen. I haven't been able to test two display port monitors at the same time yet and I have a Displayport to HDMI adapter incoming... Which is not something I want to do but it'll help with troubleshooting, possibly. I've never had to dispute an eBay purchase before so I'm hesitant to try and fight that battle but it's looking more and more like I will have to.

That's a fairly good price.

Do you have onboard graphics? I'm just thinking maybe its worth keeping it with the 1 display port and running your other monitors of the IGPU but it only works if you have an IGPU ofcourse.

I'm presuming you have the extra monitors just for general use stuff and only use one for gaming?

It's almost like your GPU is detecting nothing is connected and cutting the signal since we know it will work until it gets into windows.

So, it seems your choices are:

  1. Fix it
  2. Return it. That would be my choice.
  3. Repurpose it from the plan you had.

Yeah, I had to knife fight on ebay about 5 or 6 times before I got one for that price.

I don't have an IGPU in this rig. It's a Ryzen 5 3600.

I tend to change my setup regularly, but yeah, I only ever use one monitor for gaming. I just have additional ones for multitasking. I also tend to find perfectly fine TVs and Monitors in the trash all the time where I live, so my collection has been growing. Luckily, I guess, is that I was only planning on using this with my livingroom tv for more casual gaming and couch co-op, so I only need one screen. If this displayport -> HDMI adapter functions properly, there's a good chance I'll just keep the gpu and have it be by side project/ mystery that i may or may not ever solve.

Yeah, its so strange to me. And when it's booting/ in bios, it's 50/50 whether the pc will choose the hdmi or the displayport.

yep. If the dp->hdmi adapter "just works", I may just keep it as my livingroom pc forever. I'll probably also test it with two displayport screens tonight.

  • 2 months later...

Just wanted to update this. I never found a solution for the HDMI output. I just bought a displayport->HDMI adapter and have been running it like that to my 4k television. It works fine this way, but is disappointing. This model also suffers from overheating. I was able to modify it and get the GPU core temps down to a reasonable level but the hotspot is still out of control. It works though.
