Save a Broken Hard drive

Stawi

Hello there!

I do have a broken 1.5 TB hard drive. S.M.A.R.T. tests C5 and C6 are at 198/199.
R/W speeds are basically non existent. It was enrypted by bitlocker and Windows currently tries to decrpyt it but doesn't move on.

I wanted to save the data from this drive but (i guess) due to bitlocker using all the capacity left on this drive i can't. Does anybody have an idea how to get to the data? I thought about mirroring the drive sector by sector but unfortunally I do not have a drive big enought for the whole partition allthough only about 700 gb of Data is used. But with bitlocker activated i cant just shrink the partition.

Thanks!

Easy way would be to buy a small HDD For cheap and then mirror the sector as you say. Shouldn't cost more than $20-$30.

mirroring might work, but with errors like that, you may not be able to get a clean copy.

Buying a 1TB HDD?  Should be dirt cheap today, they're not expensive.  (Or buy a 1TB SSD and then reuse it for something else after, and not have a HDD.)

but, again, getting data off the drive is gonna be hit or miss.  If it's that important, pay to get the data off from a pro company.

Find a drive withat least 1.5TB free, then try using ddrescue to copy the raw sectors to an image.

Cloning the drive would be your best option. You do have the Bitlocker recovery code to access the data, right?

Yes, Recovery key is available. Guess I'd need to get a bigger Hard drive then.. Cloning a smaller partition from this drive that was not bitlocker encrypted seems to have worked fine.

Update:
I was able to boot into safe mode and stop bitlocker, which wasn't possible with normal boot. After that I was able to get allmost all the data. Nevertheless thanks for your help!
