Hello,

I am looking for a secondary ssd with 1TB for some extra storage.

RN i have NVMe samsung 960 Evo used as a main storage connected to asus x-370 prime pro board which only supports 1 nvme drive.

My question is do I get a 2.5" ssd (was looking at samsung 870 evo), or do I try to snag one more nvme and buy an adapter for it, and if so what are my options for adapter?

What are ups and downs for doing this?

Budget is around 70€.

Any advice is welcome.

Almost all SATA SSD's are included in this.  So pretty much grab any one of them.

There isn't a noticeable difference in SATA vs NVMe storage for secondary at all, or even for boot/main.

Obviously traditional SATA cables arent going to hit nearly the speeds of PCIe slots, but the storage linkd below is a 2TB Samsung 560/530MB/s SSD. Again not NVME fast, but still pretty decent in and of itself! There are definitely cheaper options than this also, and are not noticeably slower.

Any advice is welcome.

SATA SSD : Slower speed compared to NVME, but still plenty for storage drive or game drive. Heck, plenty enough for OS drive.

Cons :

- Takes more space,

- Speed can be kinda lacking if you transfer a lot of big files often.

- in some country priced nearly the same as an NVME.

Pros :

- Doesn't need adapter for sure

- Easier to remove & add, very compatible with all kind of PC (as long they support SATA).

- In some country cheaper than NVME.

NVME : Blazing speed, but hardly noticeable if you only use it for casual stuffs. You can notice the speed difference when you are transfering big files.

Cons :

- Limited to M.2 slot your motherboard came with, so you will need a special adapter if you want to add more.

- Can be kinda annoying to remove or add to the system

- In some country more expensive than SATA SSD

Pros :

- Eats only a little bit of space

- Effin fast

- Can be the same price as SATA SSD in some country

So yeah, if you need to use an adapter to add 1 more NVME to your system. I'd say may as well just get a SATA one.

Since buying a good enough adapter will cost you something, and also takes more space & uses one of your PCIE slot.

Unless you really need the speed only NVME can give.

I only ever owned Samsung 870 EVO, Crucial MX500, Transcend 230S . But yep, pretty much almost all SATA SSD is the same in terms of speed.

Just.... don't buy the obvious scam who-knows-what-brand-but-super-cheap-for-huge-capacity ssd . Unless you are ready to get burned.

No, I mean simp. With how hard I act like a sellout for them you'd think Team paid me for it but nope, I just love them. Whenever I get off my ass I'll be getting a 1TB MP44 to replace the 128GB PM991 in my laptop. Don't really need all the space but fuck it, that just means I can have a massive swap file because it only has 8GB of RAM lol

You can add 2 or more M.2 SSD on cheap PCIe to M.2 adapters.

in PCIEX16_2 ( PCIe 3.0 x 8, so 3500MBps  but it changes the GPU slot to PCIe 3.0 x8)

in PCIEX16_3 ( PCIe 2.0 x 4, so only 1600MBps ).

i would go NVMe if there are some good ones for 70€

If you go to PC Part Picker, you can compare prices across a number of retailers at once. Here's a link for SSD storage sorted by Price Per GB ascending to give you a list of SSDs sorted by value for capacity:

https://pcpartpicker.com/products/internal-hard-drive/#t=0&sort=ppgb&page=1

If you only want 1TB drives (2TB drives are actually better value at the moment in terms of price per GB, but are more expensive in absolute terms) the cheapest 1TB SATA drives are these 4 options all for $35 from several different brands and retailers:
