Hello!

New to the forums here but I thought it may be the perfect place to seek some upgrade advice.

I recently purchased the Neo G9 monitor from Samsung. Previously I had a dual monitor setup of a 34" QHD HP and 27" Spectre monitor. On this setup I could run games at max settings on the HP and YouTube max quality on the Sceptre without any performance issues.

I know the Neo G9 was gonna be a beast to run, and whenever I'm running fullscreen on a game everything runs buttery smooth. But when I try to "dual screen" I get some serious struggling on either YouTube or in-game (anything over 720p just makes everything super sluggish).

Originally I thought maybe my CPU could use an upgrade but if I drop my in-game graphics down to a lower setting everything is perfect again so then it got me thinking the GPU is the bottleneck.

I'm relatively new to PC building so some guidance would be a huge help 🙏

Here are my current specs:

Ryzen 5 3600

16gb RAM 3200mhz

AMD RX 5600XT

B550AM motherboard

Also on a side note, depending on what the upgrade recommendations are, the motherboard is from an old prebuilt. How can I check if a newer gen CPU or GPU is compatible with the motherboard?

You are correct that if dropping in-game visuals gives a noticeable improvement to framerate, that's a good indication that you're limited by your GPU. Given the resolution of a 1440p ultrawide is approaching that of a 4K display, this shouldn't be surprising. The 5600XT is a reasonably good card, but in 2023, it's really a 1080p card.

What power supply does your computer have? That will be important to determine how far you can go in terms of a GPU upgrade without upgrading that.

i would definitely upgrade the gpu to start, but you will have to upgrade the cpu later to match. I also recently got the a neo g8, and am running a dual monitor setup with a samsung 27" 1080p 240hz monitor.

5800x3d

16gb 3000mhz

3070 ti

b550 mobo

even with my 3070 ti, i also struggle to watch youtube and play games on the g9 at the same time, usually making both stutter. getting this monitor is even making me consider upgrading my gpu, since im one that likes to yank the sliders.

The biggest reason for stuttering while playing YouTube and a game is unfortunately related to HAGS. Turning that off will pretty much fix it but also cause a performance drop in some games.

Even with 1080p 280Hz and a 4070 Ti YouTube stutters badly in combination with some games even if the game is still above 300FPS (like world of tanks).

Okay sweet glad to know my newby brain gears are working somewhat properly.

The PSU is also from the prebuilt. It was a 550w PSU, that all I got without having to disconnect my rig and moving everything to see it lol (I can though, if it'll help the discussion)

I figured IN the event that I was gonna do a GPU upgrade that it would probably require a PSU upgrade, which I'm pretty okay with for the sake of some future-proofing you know. Any way to know if the MoBo would need an upgrade too to support the newer GPU?

The motherboard shouldn't impact GPU support. And with a 550W PSU, you do have some options for upgrading. A 6700XT, for example, recommends a 550W unit for the whole system. But if you want to go much higher end than that, you probably should upgrade the PSU as well.
