Noctua NH-D14 from AM4 to AM5

See, thats the part where i wripped my hair off. For some reason i threw out the box, so i dont have the parts in hand.

But just to clarify: the cooler is mounted to AM4 (5600X), and will not fit the 7800x3d as it is now?

It should fit the 7800x3d, as if it's mounted to an AM4, it will mount the exact same way to an AM5.  For example my EK AIO fits both AM4 and AM5 with the same mounting hardware, so if the hardware was used on AM4 then reuse it on AM5.

I mean, I have no idea if you bought it before 2019  of course.

Though you can get a new cooler, or get a mounting bracket if infact it doesn't work.

You have options.  And a CPU Cooler is the least your concerns in a PC build, IMO.

I was about to take the PC apart, when i it struck me: NH-D14 might not fit AM5.

So i googled, and it actually does. But im not sure if it requires a new mounting bracket.

Does anyone have experiece going from AM4 to AM5 with a D14?

I found on their website, that D14 sold after 01/2019 includes AM4 and AM5 brackets.

Im curious if that mount is the same, or a different one.

Yes, the AMD AM5 motherboard socket uses the same CPU cooler bracket size as the AM4 socket.

Won't need a mounting bracket if you have the cooler purchased after the date specified.

Worst case, just buy the 7mm offset bracket for it which Noctua should have. Its like $5 especially if you have Amazon Prime where shipping should be free. It works as advertised and improves CPU temps by 2-3C, which can matter on 7000x3D.

Amazon.com: Noctua NM-AMB12, Offset AMD AM5 Mounting Bars for Improved Cooling Performance (Silver) : Electronics

TLDR: AM5's CCD positioning isn't centered on the CPU substrate therefore is offset, where offsetting the cooler to accommodate provides better cooling for the CCD. This wasn't the case with AM4, mostly.

NH-D14 will cool a 7800x3D perfectly fine.

You can just ask Noctua for one. Provide proof of purchase (invoice, email, I've literally screenshot my eBay purchase of a used motherboard before) for the motherboard and CPU cooler and they should send you whatever mounting hardware you need for free. Worst case you'll have to buy it for like $8.

Thanks for reply everyone. 🥰

Lucky me, everything worked fine transferring from AM4 to AM5 with the same mounting brackets.

Actually, JayzTwoCents just did this video today. There's apparently some issues with AM4 coolers that use the clips due to the IHS height of AM5 cpus. Likely 90% of AM4 coolers are fine it sounds like but there's def a chance.

It's worth a watch.

Feels?  Got actual temperature measurements?
