Hi, I'm running windows 11 on one of my computers but everytime i try and acsess my modem at "\\telstra-modem\" it responds with "\\telstra-modem is not accessible. You might not have premission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access premissions. The remote procedure call failed and did not excute." I Don't know why this happens as a fresh install of 10 on other devices just work and accessing this server was fine before the upgrade. I know there is no passwords at all to it, Can any body help explain why this happened and possible fixes.

Attempts:

1. yes i tried to reinstall

Notes: yes i do need 11 for certain things otherwise i would have went back to 10

Screenshot of the error:Screenshot(5).thumb.png.88bcbc8e0cb8d298402a24958853f9c8.png

Have you made sure that the network settings have been set to 'Private' and not 'Public'

I had the same issue where I couldn't access any of my network recourses including NAS and other PCs. Changing the Network from public to private solved it for me.

sounds like your telstra modem is your router... so depends on your ip range you have localy..  you should be able to do an ipconfig /all in a cmd with admin rights on your computer, and the gateway adress should be your modem ip adress.. in the web browser go to your gateway IP directly using the IP adress.

you can look in your hosts file too add the dns name telstra-modem and link it to the correct IP adress.

It would also be handy to make sure that the device is visible on your network.

Open a command prompt / terminal and type 'arp -a'

this should list all devices on your network and detail their IP and MAC addresses. If you are unsure which device is which, the MAC address of your modem / router should be on a sticker.

I used its defualt IP address as well, which throws out the same error just with the new address, i logged into the modem via chrome with the same ip address and checked file and printer sharing and the address i used were indeed correct.

the modem appears as "192.168.0.1" which is the other address i used it also displayed the physical address which from memory is the same as the mac address, it says that its IP type is dynamic but all my other systems show the same thing when typing that command for the modem specifically

I did, check but it has all been prerouted and works for other systems so i don't want to stuff somthing that will cause them to stop working, thanks for the link though as i did learn a few things about the modems settings i didn't know before

if you look up DNS server settings in your modem/router/firewall/DNS device.. all private modem/routers usually are a combination of them all. also DHCP and NAT device.  server distributing IP adress on the 192.168.X.x network or 10.x.x.x  you will find the device name there what it will broadcast to your local network.

it's a broadcast usually and local name, if you add it to local DNS it will be more stabile.

So, my very limited networking knowledge is running dry now.

1. is the modem / router accessible from other devices / pc's on your network (not running windows 11)

2. on your Windows 11 system does ping 192.168.0.1 result in success or do you get a 'request timed out' ?

1. Yes, it works with other devices on the network but it also works with others devices on 11, this computer just refuses to connect (Note the system is the only 11 system that doesn connect but is was able to connect when on 10, so its not the computer)
2. it does ping and does get very consistent responses.

first you have to access your modem.. by using the IP adress.. if your network is in the 169.x.x.x range you don't have a network. many routers has a setting that makes it only possible to access it if you are using a network cable to connect to it as well.. so that can be the reason you can not access it. (a security feature so noone can hack your network and change things over wifi)

when you have logged on you check the host setting for the device.. and if it has a DNS page to config at all.. it should be self explanatory to add telstra-modem as a record and add the ipadress you are currently accessing to that name. usually as a-host record. it will then automaticaly be looked up by all clients connected to your network then.

but as i said.. open a CMD with admin rights.. type in ipconfig /all .. and the gateway adress you find there if the ip range is in 192. or 10 range.. (private adress segments.. you should find a gateway adress too.. that should be the ip adress you can log onto your modem with as described in the link above.

Feck! - I just hate those kinda problems.

Are you connected to your network via ethernet or wireless? Which ever one you use, try the other one.

If it also has issues then its a 100% windows problem, if it does work then its maybe a driver issue

Yes,

The OP just needs to see if it works or not.

it can work.. if it's not disabled.. depending on unit, it needs to be enabled.. or should be disabled first. 😄

so it would be more certain it works when using ethernet or console cable.

Feck! - I just hate those kinda problems.

Are you connected to your network via ethernet or wireless? Which ever one you use, try the other one.

If it also has issues then its a 100% windows problem, if it does work then its maybe a driver issue

I checked the drivers there all upto date over ethernet doesn't work either

Note: i have tried reinstalling windows, reseting network settings, Fresh wipe and install, etc. so i don't think it is windows issues considering i used thousands of diffrent iso's and USB's for the installers, and used Microsoft ISO's aswell not having issues on other sytems as mentioned above, it also worked with the modem fine on 10 but this is the only one sturgiling on 11 and other 11 computers are fine. Yes sadly i do need 11 though otherwise i would have went straight back to 10

first you have to access your modem.. by using the IP adress.. if your network is in the 169.x.x.x range you don't have a network. many routers has a setting that makes it only possible to access it if you are using a network cable to connect to it as well.. so that can be the reason you can not access it.

My modem doesn't have anything but wierless management via a webpage of the router address the rest of the ports are USB (For Printer or Storage), DSL, WAN and Lan but all those ports are in ues, It has a DNS page but looking at it is just using the telstra DNS and the secondary was none, i tried using the Cloudflare and google ones but that ended up disabling all of them so i switched back to telstra and no secondary, It said the ip address range was 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.254,  and my laptop is in the range and the lease day is 1d. I'm unsure of what else to do all of wifi settings on the sytems match others any other ideas?

ah.. your laptop, set netbios.. that is the protocol you try to use(it uses only MAC broadcast. it's ok for local lan's that uses a hub(before switches).. or coaxial network cable with terminators etc. ) .. to run over tcp/ip.. the protocol you you are using(and should be using).  it's usually a check in the settings somewhere.  this is an old remnant from the old ages... aka nt4.0 .. and win98 and earlier.

there is a file under c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc called hosts you can for your local pc add an ip to any pc name.. you need to open it with admin rights or you can't save it..  but test if netbios over ip works first. it should work. but will take some time to update.. like a few hours .. but if it still don't work.  open a cmd windows with admin rights and type   notepad.exe c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts  and hit enter..  you should add an entry without a hashtag infront that says: 192.168.0.1  telstra-modem

and save and close it.. the effect are immediate so you should be able to open it after that.

use tab to space it even with localhost you can add the line under 127.0.0.1 localhost

don't change the DNS servers .. .. all ip's are distributed with a service called DHCP, it should be set to auto as your modem are distributing all data..  ip linked to each computers MAC adress, DNS and gateway ..

your modem has 4 LAN ports or something? personaly i never use wifi on my main system.. just for laptop's phones etc.. and it sounds like your modem isn't locked to admin only through cable if you can get into it anyway.
