How do dual gpu setups work?

I want to upgrade my pc, but I don’t want to buy a 30 or 40 series graphics card. So Ive been wondering about running a dual gpu setup. I have a couple questions tho: can I run different levels of gpus (a rtx 2070 and 1060ti), can I run both amd and nvidia, and are there any complex things I need to know about before running a system like this?

If your not gonna use SLi then just plug and play. I don't think you even can use SLi between generations

 

Do be aware that this isn't going to help with gaming performance whatsoever since they don't have an SLi bridge between them. And SLi's dead anyways

Why would you do this? Sell the 1060 and be happy with the 2070 performance.

Depends on use case. As there are lots of them. 
So how they work will depend on what you want to do.

If you want to play games exclusively, do not today use a dual GPU system. Does not make sense to do.
