Hello everyone, I was given an older PC a Dell Inspiron 3847 awhile back and it came with a i3-4130 CPU. I was using it for web surfing and social media. So I decided to buy a used CPU online a i7-4770s. So today I got it delivered. After installing it I got an amber light that was flashing twice. I found some flash codes for Dell and it displayed that is was a CPU failure. So it was DOA. No big deal. So I installed the i3 back into it and now have a solid amber light. Yet only thing from Dell that I could find from about the solid amber light said that it was hibernation. They didn't list any info for solid light colors for troubleshooting only info for flashing lights. There have been no beeps before or after. Has anyone dealt with this? Any solutions or is the mobo dead?

I've dealt with a dead motherboard, it isn't fun and is an absolute pain to troubleshoot, (especially since it was screaming about the CPU being bad).

Please follow the below shared instructions to identify the point of failure. First we will try to release the residual charge from the system to check if it powers on or not. Here are the steps:

  • Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer including the power supply.
  • Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power supply. Try to restart the computer and check.

If the issue still persists, try swapping the system power cable with monitor power cable if they are identical, else you may try powering on the system using a good known power supply. It can be an issue with the power socket as well, test it on another working power socket too.

If you are still not able to get the system powered on, then most likely the motherboard has failed, and hardware replacement may be required.

Unplug the PC, remove battery, hold power for 10 seconds. Reconnect the battery, plug in the PC again, and then turn on the PC again. If that doesn't work, the Mobo must've kicked the can or a pin might have been bent or obstructed in the CPU socket
