So im thinking about getting the Lenovo IdeaPad y570p the only thing keeping me from getting it is battery life. So what I am planning to do is just dual boot Linux mint and do a fresh install of Windows 7 (which w7 should fix the dual GPU stuttering problem with this laptop). One thing I was wondering is if it's possible to disable at least one of the 2 GPU's. I want to do this every time I boot into Linux Mint to hopefully save a little bot of battery life. Im sure there is a way to do it in the Bios, but is there a way to automatically do it every time I boot into Linux but not Windows?

Thanks :)

You can disable SLI/Crossfire via the control panel.

I think if you disable it in Linux, but not in windows(in the control panel), it will work eaxctly like you want it to, I'm not 100% sure though.

Edit: I mean the Nvidia/AMD control panel.

You can disable SLI in windows,

Also as far as i know it has optimus so the GPU will not on unless it is being used, you can also disable it if you like

Will disabling SLI pretty much turn off the secondary GPU?

It does turn if off as far as I know, I do it on my laptop all the time

If I am not gaming, I can boot using intel graphics

I actually found this on the Lenovo forum:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/New-Y510P-with-poor-battery-life-less-than-1-hour/td-p/1221647

It is very informative. It pretty much says that it is impossible for Optimus and SLI to coexist. But if you disable SLI it does about triple your battery life. Yet if you disable SLI that does not mean you can enable Optimus. You would have to physically take out the secondary GPU and install the Intel Graphics drivers.

Thanks for all your help guys  :D

AFAIK, Intel IGP is disabled in Lenovo dual GPU laptop.

You can remove that 2nd GPU, it's in the ODD bay.

Really? I do it with all my laptops , though only one has Dual graphics cards and they are AMD, but all of them let me boot with IGP, I have to do it manually on my alienware, it requires a restart but it does let me

Yeah, i remember when they released Y400 & Y500 last year, the IGP was disabled for SLI compatibility. That was Ivy bridge based though, not sure if they changed it with Haswell.
