gpu drivers wont install/update

just that simple.

i click install in the driver & software panel of AMDs software and the install just stops running and closes , nothing in task manager and no error message at all

I tried downloading the driver from AMD and doing a manual install and the software just hangs and does nothing after a few menus with a blank window

I've heard newer amd drivers weren't good but i honestly had no idea it was THIS bad. it's just for a plain old 6800xt nothing weird or special about it

the current driver works but is just too old to run a demo i want to try

Which driver version are you on?

 

I assume you've downloaded the 23.7.1 driver as the new one?

23.7.1 is the newer one

the one i'm using is 21.10.2

Your assumption that a simple driver update from a driver from nearly 2 years ago to a recent driver would go without encountering potential hiccups is flawed. There were driver and software redesigns in the meantime. The installation should still work, but there might be other issues causing your trouble.

Have you run sfc /scannow recently?

 

Tried uninstalling the older drivers before running the new setup? Perhaps DDU?

 

What you are experiencing is not something that usually happens with AMD drivers.

Is this perhaps a post with the intention to show AMD drivers as bad, maybe some nvidia propaganda?

yeah maybe. I never update drivers unless there's a problem with the current ones. It's a tradeoff which limits optimizations but vastly increases consistency which is the cornerstone to reliability. This demo appears to be the only thing so far that the current driver didn't fully support otherwise everything else works fine.

no. I have zero loyalty to brands. I like hardware not logos.

i'll give it a shot i just hope system restore brings back my original driver when it ends up not working.

Time for you to get a new computer by doing this:

Flash the latest BIOS

Install the latest chipset drivers, download from AMD if you're on AM4/AM5.

Install the latest other drivers, use Iobit Driver Booster to easily get the newest audio and lan drivers.

Update your Windows to the latest.

Use PatchMyPC (home updater) to update your applications to the latest versions.

Enjoy a completely new performance uplift.

i'll take a performance hit for reliability. doesn't matter if it's 10% slower because it's 100% faster than broken.

I promise you my machine is faster than a machine that doesn't work. Sounds super crazy and a way far out there concept but theres a reason all of my machines last longer than yours.

The proprietary 6490m switchable. There's only one driver for it so don't bother linking me the generic 6490m driver thinking that's the same thing.  Much easier to just not have this mentality than just blindly letting software do whatever it wants thinking only godlike programmers who donate to charities and always wear their seatbelts write drivers.

Did you or did you not manage to install the 23.7.1 driver?

I mean, we could chat about other drivers and stuff, but that's not solving the issue at hand.
