For cheap and easy, you can either go the 5600+motherboard or drop in a HT Intel chip, like 8700K or 9900K (depending on price).

Or give us a budget and we can look at current gen Intel if you want to keep your RAM, or AMD/Intel if you want to step into DDR5 and plan on a new GPU soonish?

I mean you do kind of have the 2 options for that. It's whatever your budget allows.

This is what a new build would look like. I would carry over the RAM, PSU, and storage (mainly the SSD). Use the new m.2 nvme ssd as the boot drive, and the Crucial SSD as spare storage for games, videos, etc. If the game's system requirements (under recommended) mention a cpu newer/higher than the 8600K, then go for a new build like this:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/NvWtmr

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X 3.4 GHz 8-Core Processor  ($173.23 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S redux 70.75 CFM CPU Cooler  ($54.95 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK ATX AM4 Motherboard  ($149.99 @ Newegg)

Storage: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive  ($109.99 @ Amazon)

Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 750 G3 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply  (Purchased For $0.00)
$963.14

An upgrade would look something like this, and save you a couple hundred $$$'s.

would you say its alright for me to stick with my current 1080 and just maybe go for a really good CPU instead?

For that we can build a whole new machine.  Is that what you want to do?  The 1080 is aging, I'd build a new machine.

sorry yeah I just cant make up my mind lol.

How does this build look? https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/jzLrxr/magnificent-amd-gamingstreaming-build

I'd tweak a few things...  I'd pair AMD with AMD, and the 7900XTX is stonger than the 4070.  Better RAM as well.  Motherboard is sold but nthing special, upgrade for Gen 5 if you have the urge.  Rest is up to you.

Double check that PSU is on the cultist Tier list A at least.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback or suggestions for potential changes. My budget for this build is around $2,000, preferably less. Additionally, I'm aiming to future-proof this PC for another 5+ years of reliable performance.

The two builds I've come up with.

Honestly, either is going to perform at the top of the class basically.  The AMD one will be a little faster but it's also more expensive.  Almost linear.

I've had Intel for decades, interspersed with AMD builds.  AMD currently now, but the 9900k/1080Ti is still my favorite.  They both make good products.

If it were me, I'd get the AMD build.

For $50 more, the all AMD build is better.

Either work well though, you'll start splitting hairs.
