I bought a Netgear D6200 router about 4 days ago and so far it's been going great except for one moderately annoying issue I'm having. I'm typing this after experiencing the issue a few minutes ago.

There is currently 5 devices accessing the router. One HTC phone (connected to the 2.4Ghz band), my laptop that I'm typing from (connected to the 2.4Ghz band), my dad's workstation connected via gigabit ethernet in an 8 port switch and his 2 printers also connected to the switch. I think I'm the only one actually loading webpages or actually using internet/network traffic currently.

My connection speed has suddenly drop to less than 0.5Mb/s, but is fine (about 9.5Mb/s) when connected to the 5Ghz band. When I connected to my extender (connects to the router via 2.4Ghz and broadcasts extended signal in 5Ghz) my speed went up to ~8.5Mb then went down to 4 after a couple seconds.

Could this be some type of QOS issue? Note: Only manual QOS options on the router settings are link speed priority for different apps.

I'm not able to restart the router but I do remember it happening between the multiple reboots I have performed on it (not because of any issues). The router is great apart from this issue and I'd love to be able to get is fixed.

EDIT: Removed the extender and my speed increased to around 4Mb. Still Not the usual 9 though..

EDIT 2: Back down to 0.3......................

6.5......

Back to 9 again...

It sounds more like an interference issue than QOS. If you run wireshark and browse for the type of traffic you are transmitting you can look up the QoS codes for it for results. I know very little about actual QoS testing. What router did you have before and what results were you getting?

Doesn't sound like traffic shaping or QoS.  Are you sure it's a QoS deal?

You may be experiencing packet loss, I find that a normally solid wifi connection can drop speeds by 40% with 5% packet loss.  If you have anything higher than 10% packet loss hardwired to your modem, call your ISP, that's a major signal issue.

Since you mentioned you are using an extender, one thing to keep in mind is that wireless repeaters/extenders are "Garbage in, Garbage out" devices, so I recommend stripping your network down to it's core and rebuild it piece by piece until you find out what's causing the slow downs.  You can then troubleshoot that one device instead of your whole network.
