Hi Everyone,

I am looking to upgrade my GPU as this is my most outdated pc part.
I am not sure what to get and I am really in a pinch here so I would love to hear the opinions of experts.

My current specs:
CPU - AMD Ryzen 9 5900x 4 Ghz
GPU - MSI Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 8GB
PSU - Corsair RM750e 750W
Ram - 32 GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance 3600Mhz
Motherboard - Gigabyte A520 AORUS Elite
Resolution Monitor - Main 1x 1080p (165hz) - Side 2x 1080p (75hz)
I use DP 3x and 1x HDMI for a external Capturecard

I live in the Netherlands, I was looking at the RTX 4070 which is about 670 euro's or the Radeon RX 6950 XT which is about 660 euro's. (my budget is around 700 euro's)
Don't really care about Raytracing or 4k gaming, maybe ill upgrade to 1440p in the future.

Thank you in advance for your responses.

Since you don't care about raytracing and if you only plan on rasterized gaming, AMD might be a better choice for you. But if you plan to do certain creative/dev work on the side (that utilizes Nvidia's CUDA system) 4070 might be for you. Nvidia's DLSS 2 slightly better compared to it's FSR counterpart, and while perceived by some like a gimmick, DLSS 3 Frame Generation is also a factor you want to consider, being an impressive way to boost your frames from playable to high refresh rate levels.

In my opinion anyway, good luck!

Well, since both cards are almost at your max budget setting, RX 6950 XT is an obvious choice, moreover you have confirmed to not using Ray Tracing.

But I wonder, where did you find the price for RTX 4070 and RX 6950?

It seems to cost way more from MSRP, moreover it almost at EUR700

If you're using it for work, the 4070 or 3090, otherwise if you're just gaming then both the 4070 and 6950 xt are good.

I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. 😉 I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give.

My phone's auto-correct is named Otto Rong.🤪😂

It's mainly for gaming/streaming

Then you should be fine going with x264 on 5900x but id consider overbudget for 7900XT or wait for 7800XT to come out. AV1 encoding protocol is a huge gamechanger that even garbage AMD VCN encoder can make a great quality stream once Twitch integrates it. Long term investment baby.

How long is the wait for a 7800 XT release in Europe?

At current prices - if I'm not mistaken, the 7900 XT in Netherlands is about 900 Euros  - and VAT tax there is 21%?   So, e.g. a Merc310 Speedster 7900 XT would require him to save an additional $375 approx. (just say +$400).   That's probably a lot to come up with?

I think the other answer is more doable - need Nvidia features e.g. CUDA/Blender/NVENC etc. i.e. you (occasionally do productivity) - Nvidia - 4070 OR you mostly game OR want the most powerful card for the $$ - then go with AMD - 6950 XT.

Correct and Correct, its like more than half more than my budget allows for, the tax is 21% but is included in the price you mentioned so around 900 Euros.
In the Netherlands we include our taxes in the sales price, so If you see 900 euros its gonna cost 900 euros.

the 7900 seems doable with a upmark fo 200 euros so ill think about it.

Thank you all for the feedback 😄

VAT is included in the listed price?  Oh, didn't know that - interesting.   I found the XFX on Amazon for 878, Azerty 878 for the ASRock PG and Pulse for 900 Euros - so, there should be choices for you if the price stays around the same.
