Hey folks! I'm looking for some feedback+sanity check for my first build in >5 years:

Budget (including currency): ~$2500USD

Country: US

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:

  • Gaming:
    • Mostly single-thread CPU-heavy games (Factorio, Rimworld, Dwarf Fortress)
    • But need graphics power to play AAA games (Cyberpunk, etc).
    • Occasional VR (mostly Elite Dangerous)
    • My monitors are 4K60 so I'm usually playing at 2K with DLSS upscaling.
  • Development:
    • Need lots of ram, multi-threaded compute
  • ML:
    • As much VRAM as reasonable for this budget
    • Vendor locked to Nvidia due to CUDA

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

  • Current plan: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/gxR3Kp
    • Monitors, peripherals, storage are already accounted for and are not part of the budget.
    • I should be able to get a used 3090 for somewhere around $800 these days. Are there any gotchas to look out for?
    • I'm agnostic on 4x16GB or 2x32GB, but having the upgrade path would be nice to have.
    • I've no strong opinion on 7900 vs 7900x - 7900x is currently marginally cheaper on Amazon right now.
    • I acknowledge the USB front header issue - I plan to run it without the front USB C for now.
  • I value function over form - the system will be behind my monitor so I don't care much for RGB or tempered glass.
  • I only refresh my system every ~5y so I'm looking for something that will last.
  • Development+ML take precedence over gaming.
  • OS is a mix of Windows 10 and Linux
