microphone issues

my pc does not work with any microphone i plug in, it always sounds muffled and very quiet. i am plugging these microphones into the 3.5mm mic port on my motherboard. 

i tested the microphones on other computers and they work fine. 

 

i suspect its something to do with my audio drivers/not having the correct ones installed as when i built this PC i used the ssd from a dell optiplex and didnt reinstall windows (i probably should have) 

what steps should i try to fix this, i beileve reinstalling windows might fix the issue but i want to avoid that if possible
 

i have an ASrock motherboard and a Ryzen CPU

try and find any dell drivers and delete them or try and install the new mobo drivers from the asrock website. if not reinstelling windows is a option
