I have a gaming laptop and plan to buy an external monitor for it and my Xbox.

The one I’m looking at is 1440p 240hz but my laptop only has a hdmi 2.0 port, which is not capable of reaching 1440p at 240hz in which case there isn’t a point in me buying it.

However, I see on amazon there are cables that do HDMI to DisplayPort such as: Amazon Basics DisplayPort to HDMI cable with gold-plated connectors 1.8 m.

Would this resolve the issue and allow me to run it at 1440p 240hz or is this just basically the same bandwidth as using a hdmi to hdmi cable. Sorry for the weirdly worded question but want to know.

What exact laptop? We can do what we can to check the compatibility of the USB Type C port assuming it has one. Many laptops support native DisplayPort through the Type C which will be far more suitable for running an external high refresh rate display.

HDMI to displayport cables won't help as you're still limited by the HDMI ports bandwidth.

Ryzen 7 7800x3D -  Asus RTX4090 TUF OC- Asrock X670E Taichi - 32GB DDR5-6000CL30 - SuperFlower 1000W - Fractal Torrent - Assassin IV - 42" LG C2 - Windows 11 Pro

Oh well it’s the MSI Pulse GL66 12UEK with the i7-12700H, RTX 3060, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 1440p 165hz built in display.

Unfortunately it doesn't mention any ability of the Type C port to do DisplayPort Alt mode.. typical of most all laptop documentation. The HDMI port lists HDMI 2.1 but then also says 4K60 which HDMI 2.0 can do (so not really HDMI 2.1). I really hate laptops lol..

Your options are hope that Type C port has DP Alt Mode (TypeC to DP adapters are cheap on Amazon) or settle for 1440p @ 144Hz using HDMI.

My thought exactly. HDMI 2.1 should be 4K@120Hz not 4K@60Hz but laptops are laptops. I really should’ve gotten a PC 🗣️

Its why I ether get something like an iPad (for my mom) or something like a Framework laptop, where I know EXACTLY what I am getting and can upgrade it.  Also don't beat yourself up over getting a laptop, as the sometimes are a far better deal than building a PC or buying one.

Also you might be able to grab one of the Capture externals Jake reviewed in:
