PC crash while gaming

Hi,

I was hoping to get some help with recurring crashes I'm having. The crashes happen when I'm gaming, and when it happens the screen turns off and the fans start blazing. The fans continue blowing untill I turn off the pc. Windows crash report gives a general Kernel Power Error 41, and the log from HWinfo64 don't show any irregularities (as far as I can see). All drivers are up to date.

Rig

Windows 11 64-bit operating system

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER

AMD Ryzen 7 3700x 8-Core

Asus ROG STRIX B450-F Gaming

G.Skill Ripjaws V 2 x 8GB

Corsair TX-M Series TX750M V2 750W - ATX12v 2.4/ EPS12V 2.92 - 80 PLUS Gold - 100-240 V

BIOS American Megatrends Inc. 2801, 18/09/2019

Edit: The thermal paste on the GPU had been reapplied by the previous owner (my brother).

Any help or advice is appreciated!

The graphics driver is crashing most likely. Try pressing control windows shift B when it happens. That’s a force reset of the driver.

If that fixes it, time to use DDU in safe mode to uninstall graphics drivers and then reinstall them. That often fixes the problem.

The kernel power error is from you forcing the restart.

Likely that the thermal pads were altered or removed in key areas when the paste was applied assuming it's not the paste itself that was applied incorrectly. A high load on the gpu will make all points that radiate heat on the gpu heat up and if inadequately cooled the pc will shut off to prevent damage. Open it up following a tutorial on youtube and check that the thermal pads are in the correct spots. If there is a pad missing or ripped find out the thickness of the pads for that specific gpu and buy new ones. They are very cheap. It also possibly a mounting pressure issue where if mounted unequally one side of the card may be inadequately cooled. check for missing screws.

If this doesn't work go my route

I would still do the DDU and reinstall drivers before taking it out and taking the cooler apart, just because it’s a pain to do and I would eliminate software as a cause first.

Hi,

...

The BIOS is too old. Update to the latest. AMD fixed a ton of stuff since 2019.

Also, download the newest chipset drivers from AMD.

Thanks, will do. I just got hold of another gpu and swapped it out to see if the gpu is the problem. It seems like the gpu does cause the crashes.
