Unfortunately I think something is wrong with the drive, put in my installation media and that can't detect it either unfortunately. Drive is about 3 years old so will be out of warranty I believe. Thank you for the help though 🙂

that's normal if you need the driver.. download ahci/raid drivers for the board on the manufacturer page extract them and put them on the install usb in it's own directory. . and select load driver bottom right when you don't see your drive to see if it pops up.

Hi all,

I put my PC onto sleep last night and when I went to wake it up I was hit with a message saying "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device". I have connected my laptop's SSD to try and trouble shoot. The m.2 boot drive (one that is no longer working) appears as an option to use in bios but when selected gives the error I listed earlier. When I boot through my second drive it does not appear in file explorer, disk management or cmd's diskpart. Any advice appreciated. Does this indicate that it's corrupted and if so how would I got around reformatting it as disk management and cmd are not detecting it. Many thanks.

a few first troubleshooting tips (nice job using a second drive)

Go ahead and try the presumed dead drive in any other m.2 slots you have and see if it can keep a connection

if this doesn't work you should closely inspect the pins on the nvme connector and look for blemishes and scratches

Another thing to try is removing the CMOS battery, waiting 2 minutes and pressing the power button while the computer is completely disconnected from power, then replace the CMOS and boot to bios.

Lastly, if you are within warranty start a support ticket with the manufacturer

brand and model on your m.2 drive?

remember samsung has a FW update for some of their 980 PRO's. or they will self destruct.

Hi thanks for the suggestions, it's a Saberent Rocket 2TB. I've used the CMOS jumper already and used both slots on my mobo. I got some progress I suppose. Windows auto repair finally kicked in giving me a 0xc0000098 message. Currently (albeit it slowly) creating a new boot drive to see if that helps fix it. I didn't notice anything wrong with the pins on either slot nor the card. Thanks for the quick replies.

you havn't mentioned mainboard either....

sounds like either your bootsector got lost.. or drivers for the nvme controller got lost.

when you installed windows did you need to load drivers to see the disk you wanted to install on?

if not.. for some reason.. it sounds like you need to do that now. when you try to reinstall.

It's a B450 Aorus Elite.

Can't remember about the install as PC has been running fine so last time I did a fresh install was over a year ago, could flashing my mobo potentially help with the nvme drivers?

Hi so I got the raid driver. Should I just put that on an empty USB drive?

I've booted using the USB drive with only the update on it. Now when I go to disk management it appears however, it says that "A device which does not exist was specified" when I try to initialise it.

Thank you for all the suggestions. Not sure what did it as nothing worked immediately however, today on turning the PC the drive is working fine again. Thank you very much for the help!

Make sure you get any data you want to keep off the drive. I had one of the first ocz SSD that did the same type of thing when it was on its way out. It could be fine for days or weeks if you leave the computer on, but then on reboot it’s gone again.

Thanks for the suggestion. Only got software on it so it should be fine if it does properly die though.
