PC Random Crashes

Go to solution Solved by johnno23,

I would start with a reset of the memory speed fixed at 5200.

AMD can handle 6000 if everything is dialed in but 5200 is its most stable speed.

that is just to try and isolate any possible memory isses.

For the bios I assume the event viewer report is referring to an older bios if the 1410 was installed without issues.

You say the power button refuses to work ? or do you mean it refused to work so you had to use the PSU power switch the one time.

if the power switch is still not working then double check that the tiny little plugs for the front panel of the case are alll inserted properly and double check that they are in the correct locations. Easy to get wrong and the lettering is so dammed small I use a magnifying glass.

You can also eliminate one other item by plugging the PC into the wall socket directly. I do not expect the UPS to be an issue but just removing it from the equation is one less item to consider.

With regard to the GetCACAps not found try the following which I copied from the Microsoft website that offers this as a solution.

This will check corrupted system files

  1. At the Search, Type Command Prompt

  2. Right-click > Open as Administrator

  3. Type this command:

    Sfc /scannow
  4. When it is complete, type another command to run the DISM Tool

  5. This will repair corrupted system files

  6. On the same Command Prompt window

  7. Copy and paste this command:

    dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  8. Wait for the command to finish, and then restart your device.

Hi, I've recently been having issues with my new pc build crashing. It didn't do this a couple weeks ago. It's a high spec build that I poured a lot into so this is a bit rough.

CPU: 7950x3D

Motherboard: Asus Rog Strix X670e pro wifi

GPU: Asus Tuf 4090

Memory: G.Skill Flares 6000mhz cl32

Storage: 2 Samsung 980 Pros 2tb

Power Supply: Seasonic Tx-1600

The only recent changes I've made to my pc is the Asus Vers. 1401 Bios, but I updated that about an hour ago to 1410. Still got another crash like 5 minutes ago rip. Another change I made was a recent RMA of my GPU which is back now. The crashes didn't begin occurring until I reinstalled the GPU. However assuming it was drivers and stuff, last night I performed a clean install. When that didn't work I did a full pc reset and updated everything I could. I'm not good at event viewer but from what I see I get errors about GetCACAps not found, and AMD-KeyId failing. Sorry for the blob of text! Anyone have any ideas on what I can do?

Edit: Forgot to mention it's generally under small workloads it crashes. Max settings cod launched, YouTube video, and discord call? No worries. Discord call, YouTube, and - randomly decides to pop a brick. Also scrolling back I have a critical error stating it didn't cleanly shut down. Assuming that's from me turning it off from the psu because the power button refuses to work. Peripheral webcam light still is on during crashes.

Edit edit: I have an external UPS from cyber power I've used for a while. I used it with my old pc that I gave to my gf with no issues. it's the 1500va AVR model. Only my pc crashes on it during the issues, not the monitors or my router. But I have seen errors in event viewer saying something about power. Another one saying bios failed to access ec before the bios update too. Seriously sorry for bombarding you guys with random info.

Thanks again for reading and maybe helping!

Hi, thank you for the help and the reply! I'll give everything a go. I'm not sure how to replicate the crashes so hopefully this works permanently. The power switch refuses to work during the crashes. It normally has an LED that lights up around it when it's powered on. But during the crashes it turns off. And is unresponsive. Once I shut off the power switch and turn it back on. The LED remains off, but it works to boot the system back up.

I never would have thought of the memory potentially causing the problems, so I really appreciate the insight. And it's great to get a second opinion on the ups. I was and still am mildly suspect about it. I'm running that command prompt now. One of the reasons for me to reset my pc completely was a worry that windows was being corrupted. Actually, my first-time resetting windows I got an error about it not fully deleting all my files. So, I formatted both my drives and tried again. I wouldn't be surprised if it might still be corrupted.

If this solves my problem and I forget to revisit the forum, thank you for the big help and hope you're doing swell!

Just wanted to leave an update:

Apparently, ASUS bios is the major cause for these crashes. In my event viewer it states "The embedded controller (EC) did not respond within the specified timeout period. This may indicate that there is an error in the EC hardware or firmware or that the BIOS is accessing the EC incorrectly. You should check with your computer manufacturer for an upgraded BIOS. In some situations, this error may cause the computer to function incorrectly." whenever I get the crashes now. They were much more common during the Vers.1401 update. But after the 1410 update. I get the same error, but it goes from 0-3 crashes an hour to 0-2 a day. As of writing this is the most recent ASUS bios update. Haven't seen anything about the previous crash reports since the help from johnno23! The corrupted windows issues with AMD are gone. Now all that's left is these buggy half-baked ASUS bios updates. May my warranty stay safe.

Getting the same issue since updating the motherboard BIOS, Did you find a fix?
