Translation: Repair (D:) Phase 2: 97% (71017 of 73098); Total: 73%; ETA 0:07:06

 

What exactly is happening. Is Windows trying to fix my HDD?

How should I interpret my ETA? It keeps rising. What format is it?

 

If anyone has experienced this situation before, please tell me what happened.

Get linux on a flash drive and be ready to boot from that. 
Get a second hard drive. 

Attempt to copy it over. Start with the most precious data and assume your drive will die within seconds. 

You might want to do some research on data backup best practices as well. 

 

As you're now keenly aware, you want a backup BEFORE you need it. 
Also RAID is not a backup per se (imagine a virus wipes out data - RAID doesn't help there), though it does improve reliability (less worry from hardware failure, unless it's something like a power surge).

RAID 1 is not a backup, and the windows is repairing the file system on partition D, not the drive.  

But yes, the file system could be corrupted, because the HDD is failing...

Post a screenshot of crystaldiskinfo for it here (if you can start the windows)
If the HDD led activity is not flashing, and you can't hear the HDD working, try to restart the PC.
