So I'm thinking of changing from my Blink cameras to some POE cameras. I have a PC that I use as a plex server and game server in my computer room, so that's got plenty of drive space and it's on 24/7.  It's got an i5 10400, 32gb ram and 44tb of drive space.

I would like to get a used POE switch in the attic space, and then drop the cable to the POE cameras surrounding the property. I'll probably be getting my cameras off Amazon.

With a cable running from my router to the POE switch, would I be able to run some CCTV software on my mediabox PC and use it as an NVR and make the videos available to view on mobile?

Pricing up a switch and 4 cameras to start, If this setup would work, it could be pretty affordable as I've already got the PC up and running for it.

I had a look for videos regarding this, however all I can find are single camera setups, or how to set up an NVR.  Any ideas?

Guarding Vision is FREE and feature-packed. No camera limit and you can designate either local or network-attached storage (NAS).

If you use Annke or Sannce POE cameras you get the complete feature set. Assign the IP's and then you can use motion detection, line crossing, item removal, and loitering detection heaps more like PTZ.

I use it to secure my business.

So I could just hook these cameras right into a POE Switch, then plug the switch into my home network and add the cameras by their IP address into Guarding Vision and it would configure everything in there and write to local storage?

Yes, Guarding Vision has a scan function that will view your network and see available cameras to add. You then select the ones you want to add to a group or all of them into a single group and then configure the bitrate, and frame rate, and add encryption if you want to be super secure. Then you will need to map the storage you want to use on the network so that GV can see it as NAS. Set the duration to keep or choose overwrite when full.

Keep this in mind! If your HDDs are consumer grade (WD Blue) and not NAS or Surveillance type, the drives will fail within 6 months of constant writing. WD Purple is my Go To Surveillance drive. WD Red or a NAS drive is ok as well.

This is great info thank you so much!

I will make sure it all works okay and then probably go with a 4tb purple drive for it.

Do you know if six 1080p streams can be written to a single drive or should I split it between two drives? Not too worried about redundancy.

You can write 16 streams to one drive as I have a client doing this with no problem

Now for a loaded question... Why not use a 2tb ssd? I've checked the WD Purple endurance and it's showing around 500TB of writes, and a Crucial MX500 2tb is showing 700TB of writes.

Do you know why the seemingly higher endurance SSD isn't used in CCTV systems? Is it just cost to gb that makes it an uneconomic choice?
