Hello, so i watched a lot of ltt videos of them in their server room(youtube recommendation 💀) and they talk a lot about networking, Is there anything I can search on Google for about this like how they have a server with a bunch of storage and all computers in their network can access it. what do they mean by network here? (devices connected to the same router and what even is a router that I get from my internet company). I have very little knowledge of networks and wanted to know some great videos or articles I can read about. Later I want to try hooking a USB stick to raspberry pi and potentially use that USB storage on other computers around the house(kind of like the servers they run, it seems possible) but I have no clue where even to begin. so can someone link keywords to search for, videos to watch or articles to read about networking (I think this would classify as networking).

for simple home use you have easier options. Linus went super high end.

Basically your router will normally have 4 ethernet ports plus a usb port. Each port can support connection to one device.

so for example if you have 2 PCs in the house a smart tv that uses an ethernet connection and say a 3rd PC where you simply want to store things but access them from the other PCs.

once all your odds and ends have been connected you simply can use the Sharing panel on your PCs to create folders etc and give access to other users. Also adding their names and a password if required etc.

if you just want a place to dump photos movies music etc that you view on your PCs and TV then use an external drive with usb connector and plug directly into the router. All PCs and TV will see it and can use it.

I suggest starting out simple and see what works well for you and what falls short. that way you will already have experience of the network and what improvements required to get to where you want to go.

Basically you already have everything in house without spending money to create a dead simple network.

Just explore what you can do already so that any budget you have is spent on achieving what you require but in many cases the simple approach is more than adequate for 95% of households.

My router doesnt have usbs, it looks like this
image.jpeg.d5ed73e880a06a73c38ea715760d9a8a.jpeg

it has 4 ethernet (i use 1 for pc and 1 for ps4), i don't wanna leave my pc on all night as electricity is high. it has like these 2 telephone things as well, out home land line is connected to that.

What i want to do is kinda like what plex does, i wanna make my own program and have it sync with my phone and pc so each pc has shared storage. (don't want to use plex since i think this will be a fun side project so that's why i want to first try doing the network stuff manually). do i need to be plugged in with ethernet or can i use like a laptop, i have a laptop running Linux so it wont use too much power and maybe experiment with that.

using the laptop should be fine. It will be connected to the netwrok so it is visible.

On the laptop you just need to set the permissions for the devices that can access it. So any PC phone etc in your possesion that you want to access files on the laptop you just enter those details. There are alos dedicated drive bays with ethernet connectivity that also have onboard CPU ram etc to set up a home server.

just look for terms related to NAS

here is a quick link to some info on synolgy but they are not the only player in town. I link to their home site as othwise you just get google results for amazon etc to go buy the product rather than research the information.
