Hello all,

 

My rig is pretty old but i've notice a drop in FPS lately. I ran some benchmarks but noticed my Palit 980ti super jetstream is only maxing out at 1341mhz core, tried to adjust with MSI afterburner but no go sadly. I flashed the bios back in the day but I was still able to use MSI AB to adjust it so unsure on what the crack is. Maybe more bios modding or hardware modding.

 

Anyone dabbled in overclocking Maxwell cards?

A card that old might need to be repasted.

No limit due to thermal no, limit due to reliable voltage however, not sure how to circumvent that however. GPU is watercooled and liquid metal.

I don't think this is an "is only" situation, that's 100MHz above the stock turbo clock already (according to TechPowerUp's spec for that card here). Were you running a higher OC before in the same games and it's no longer hitting that?

From looking around on google it appears that most 980ti can reach 1420-1550+. unsure on the clock speed changes just noticed some performance lacking.

You'd have to know what yours was running before to compare vs now, general internet numbers don't mean your specific GPU was capable of that. Are you noticing performance lacking for your card or vs what you think a 980 Ti should be capable of? I'd expect them to choke more and more in modern titles as they get less and less driver optimizations before finally being cut off. But if it was fine in X game before and suddenly isn't, that is unexpected.

I tried to find my old benchmarks but couldn't for some reason. Probably deleted them by accident so I can't grab evidence to give. Have you played with maxwell cards before? Any advice on overclocking it with bios?

Is 1342 the actual running clock during a bench? Looking at my notes I was benching at 1414 on an air cooled model. Don't suppose you have paid 3DMark? You might have old benches stored online there.

Years back, my first big boy GPU was a used MSI 980 Ti in 2017-ish, EVGA one a little bit after that. IIRC they were just a more efficient Kepler, pretty simple cards, increase voltage increase multi clock goes up. So long as you aren't hitting throttle temperatures they should just clock till they run out of voltage or ability. I didn't do any BIOS modding stuff. MSI Afterburner should let you unlock voltage control, put the voltage and power target sliders all the way up, then mess with the multipliers.

I do but sadly all my benches are with 2x 980ti so the results are way out as you would imagine. I sold one of the 980ti and the waterblock on it so can no longer retry. It is both MSI AB and HWinfo both report that speed sadly.

I tried that but there is no change at all.

I think hotspot was 83c but haven't ran any tests today so not 100% on that, as for voltage underload same again. I'll run some tests when I get a moment and get back to you.

83-85C on the core is usually where they'll throttle. You should be nowhere near that on water. Have you repasted in a while? LM sucks, it'll "dry up" far faster than normal paste, and if the waterblock's contact plate is bare copper, the LM will actually soak into the copper.

Probably where my issue is, Copper block with Coolabs LM from years ago. I'll drain my loop after getting some baseline results and retest. My bios wasn't made by me, a guy on Overclock.net used to make them for people so I'm wondering if something was overlooked etc when he made it, he was in high demand back then so not blaming him if something was missed, stuff happens, be reet.
