Desktop Mode Resolution

Go to solution Solved by xAcid9,

Maybe it's DSR? Try turn on DSR in NVCP.

Weird question. I recently bought an LG 32GP850 (1440p gaming) to sit alongside a Samsung LU32H850 (4k work).

As you'd expect, the first annoyance I run into was two monitors with different resolutions sitting next to each other but behold, for some reason my Display settings allowed me to set the "Desktop Mode" resolution of the LG monitor higher than the Signal Active resolution of 2560 x 1440 (IIFRC, it was pretty much 4k). While it looks slightly blurry, it was good enough for work and I just switched to the native resolution when I'm gaming.

Now, I just built a new computer, same OS (Windows 11), swapped over the same graphics card (3060) but for some reason now only the native resolution (2560 x 1440) is showing up, not the higher resolution. I can't remember ever switching anything on or off but can't seem to work out how to reenable this extra resolution. Changing the refresh rate doesn't make it appear and I never previously installed any extra monitor driver, so I'm stumped.

Anyone have any ideas?

Unfortunately, I've tried switching the ports on the graphics card but I'm using the same two monitors with the same two display port cables plugged into the same graphics card, which just happens to be installed in a new computer.

Sorry i can't help about it. Hopefully someone experienced enough comes for your rescue.

Have you downloaded the latest/stable Nvidia drivers? I would look in the Nvidia control panel, you may find some options for custom/different resolutions there.

It's worth noting, if your monitor is a 1440p, scaling it to "4k" won't magically give you more pixels or anything like that, so you're likely better off sticking to the native resolution.

Yep, have the latest drivers and have played around with the Nvidia control panel to no avail but I think there must be something there I'm missing. I tried plugging the monitor back into the old computer (which now has another old graphics card) and the extra resolution no longer appears - next step will be to reinstall the 3060 in the old computer but even if it does work I will still be left wondering how.

I do totally realise I'm not getting any free pixels, the annoyance for me is more windows scaling as they move across the monitors so I'm happy to deal with the blurry downscaling.

Try this if you haven't already found this document:

If you don't want to click the link, here's a screen snip.

Edit: I see this doesn't look like it applies to your GPU, apologies! I do recall having a custom resolution option on my personal PC I just can't check that at this time. I may be mistaking resolution for a custom refresh rate, however.

I did have a try of this but when I hit test it said my monitor wasn't compatible (at 4K). I'll have to try some intermediate resolutions but I definitely didn't previously have to add a custom resolution so was hoping someone may have come across the magic button 🙂
