controller help

Hello all. I recently completed my first build and its awesome except for one thing, I cannot get my controller to connect. I use a usb bluetooth adapter for an xbox one controller. I have gotten it to work a few times thru a combination of unpluging/repluging the adapter and holding the pairing buttons. Its honestly such a pain in the ass I end up just playing mouse and keyboard games. The adapter shows up under devices, sometimes it says driver error, but most the time it doesn't, that seems to have no barring on it working. I'm assuming its some software problem but all I could find on my own was the xbox accessories app but all that says is "please attach a device", not helpful. If anyone has any experience or ideas I would be extremely grateful. Thanks for reading!

Yes it does, but as an unknown device. I also forgot to mention that it always worked fine on my old laptop.

So apparently controllers don't update over Bluetooth. Id be lying if I said I knew that controllers need updates, but still. Pugged it in with a cable, logged in to Xbox accessories, updated. Works great now. Thank you for trying to help but it turns out I'm just dumb.
