Random shutoffs / freezing

fxscreamer

Hi,

I have one of those headache issues where there are random shutoffs. This is a system I built for a friend a few years back. I'll itemize it out.

THE ISSUE

- Machine will black screen / restart anywhere from 1 minute at boot, sitting at desktop, or hours of gaming. Very random, but guaranteed to happen daily.

- When black screening, sometimes the sound will keep playing, but video freezes, then full restart.

- System appears stable when idling at BIOS screen

THINGS TRIED SO FAR

- BIOS fully updated and reset

- Full wipe, fresh install of Windows 10

- All temps are within reasonable spec

- Memtest ran on memory, no issues found

- Memory running stock, no XMP, issue persists.

THE SYSTEM (built in 2019, with 3080 in 2021)

- Louqe Ghost S1 SFF Case

- Intel 9900K (stock)

- EVGA 3080 XC3 Black (stock)

- ASUS ROG Strix Z390-I Gaming Motherboard

- NZXT Kraken X62 240mm with custom Noctua fans

- G.Skill Trident Z Royal 32GB (16GB x 2) at 3200mhz (running XMP, but also tested stock)

- 1TB NVM.e 970 Evo Plus, 2TB WD Blue M.2 SSD

- Corsair SFX 750W Platinum PSU (second one. First one blew up, made a POP about a year ago)

- System plugged into good power conditioner as well

NEXT STEPS

- He ordered a new mid-tower case (Meshify 2) to get away from SFF for now. Easier to test.

- Also ordered Seasonic 850W Titanium Prime PSU to rule out PSU issues (and because of the bigger case with ITX board)

I'm suspecting motherboard and possible power delivery to the components. I'm also worried the last popping PSU might've damaged things. We haven't tested ram sticks and dimm slots yet since the Ghost S1 is an absolute pain in the ass to work in (hence the new case order). I can't imagine the CPU causing this. I'm slightly worried the GPU could be an issue, perhaps bad "new" Nvidia drivers, even on a fresh Win10 install?

TL;DR

Again, it's a delayed restart response. Screen goes dark, sound briefly still plays.... restart. Can crash 1 minute after boot to desktop idle, or hours into gaming. Any ideas of what you think it could be?

This would be my next step in trying to solve the issue you're having. Any errors show up in event viewer under System (Windows Logs > System)? Event ID 41 perhaps? I'd suspect there is more of a concern due to the previous power supply and only having 750W making a popping sound. Power supplies can either damage or destroy other components when they die.

I had an issue with my graphics card, an RX 6900XT black screen restarting once after owning it for a month; DDU drivers and reinstall, black screen in game followed by black screen a minute after logging back in, hard resetting the PC and VGA light comes on. Had to RMA and the card was defective- no issues since the replacement came.

I have had that issue both when I had bad memory, bad cpu, screwed up drivers (probably not your problem based on op)

Could try running memtest86 to see if it fails anything there

Oh yeah, memtest was ran and found no issues. I'll add to my initial post. CPU's rarely go bad, but I feel when they do... they simply don't post at all. Would be strange if that was the case, but temps are actively monitored and are totally within safe levels (70-80C at load).

I've seen issues where a board isn't getting the proper power, voltage to ram running XMP and being unstable. Manually boosting voltage can solve this, but we ran stock 2133mhz just to try and made no difference.

Yeah, he checked the logs and nothing specific shows. Just random crash errors with little information. Not sure if he saw an Event ID 41 error. I can ask him.

Ok that's good, hopefully haha. I know for me, event ID 41 would show up, basically just states the system loss power unexpectedly at such and such date/time. They hardly help diagnose the problem as their a generic message.
