You're way overspending on CPU for a gaming rig: even an 8 core part is part is probably overkill if you're not explicitly planning to use those cores.

Also, why two SSDs? If you want something for holding games and other large software/files, a cheaper drive (NVME, SATA or even a hard drive) is definitely a better value than something as high-perf as a 970.

Additionally, if you want 4K you might want more horsepower than a 3070ti can provide, and nearly 700 for one of those cards is frankly too much imo. Other cards in similar price or performance classes are better values at this point.

Something like this might be a better option:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/9hWB3y

If you want, you can apply the following tweaks:

  • swap out the 4070ti for a 7900xt if you feel you don't particularly care for dlss or rtx...
  • ...or pick up a 6800/6800xt for way less
  • save 10$ by going for a 7700 over a 7700x, or 10$ by choosing a 7600. Just turn PBO on on those non-x chips.
  • you can even go cheaper on storage if you desire

AMD Ryzen R7 1700 (3.8ghz) w/ NH-D14, EVGA RTX 2080 XC (stock), 4*4GB DDR4 3000MT/s RAM, Gigabyte AB350-Gaming-3 MB, CX750M PSU, 1.5TB SDD + 7TB HDD, Phanteks enthoo pro case

Went with the 7700 over the 7900X; as with gaming, an 8c/16t CPU should be more than enough. Going with the 7700 saves some money compared to the 7700X. All you have to do is enable PBO, and you basically get X performance anyway.

Changed the cooler, because if you do decide to enable PBO; having the better cooling capacity will assist with the 7000 series CPU (which tend to run pretty hot). While the non-X CPUs run cooler than the X, having the extra cooling capacity isn't bad for $40 more. If you decide to dive into some overclocking, you will get better temps with the 280mm compared to the Air Cooler too.

No reason to overpay for the motherboard. These AM5 motherboards are already overengineered, saving money won't be a detriment.

For less money I was able to go with a faster kit of memory, no-brainer there.

You didn't necessarily mention why you had the segmented storage setup. Regardless, I was originally going to go with two Crucial options, but for a gaming setup the 2TB Kingston will suffice.

With many of the changes I made I was able to fit a 4070 Ti into budget, which is a solid performer at 4K. This is a way better choice than a 3070 Ti and only $130 more. A 4070 Ti is basically on par with a 3090 Ti.

I left the case alone, because that is a preference usually.

Lastly, while the PSU you chose is a great unit. It's not really necessary. This 850W is a multi-rail Tier A unit on the PSU Tier List. It will be more than enough.

  • 2 weeks later...

I see some combo offers from Micro center. Do you think these are any good deals ?

Also I was thinking to go with a ATX motherboard considering a future Wifi Card upgrade down the line.

https://www.microcenter.com/search/search_results.aspx?Ntk=all&sortby=match&N=4294833320+4294818900&myStore=true

Specifically this one which is in stock at the moment -

Also with AMD releasing new Processors in Feb, is it worth waiting to see the prices of AM5 will come down ?

There are definitely some good deals to be had at Micro Center right now. For instance, if it's in stock at a store near you this 7900X combo is great:

https://www.microcenter.com/product/5006230/amd-ryzen-9-7900x,-asus-b650e-f-rog-strix-gaming-wifi,-gskill-flare-x5-series-32gb-ddr5-6000-kit,-computer-build-combo

If you drop down to a 7700X you can still get a free 32GB kit of DDR5 and $20 off any motherboard:

https://www.microcenter.com/product/5006208/amd-ryzen-7-7700x-raphael-am5,-g-skill-flare-x5-32gb-ddr5-6000-dual-channel,-cpu-ram-combo

Waiting could be a good idea or a bad idea. Prices could come down, or deals like this good go away. So it's hard to say. If you were waiting because you were interested in the 7000X3D chips, I would say that makes sense. However, waiting to see if prices come down further, probably not. At places like Micro Center they are already incredibly discounted. I could be wrong, but I feel like with the non-X parts launched, and adding X3D SKUs to their lineup. They will have a wide-range of products at different price points.

Any difference if I go with overclocked version of 4070 Ti ?

I need to go to Micro Center anyway. Try to see if the Overclocked version is ok (for $29 more) ?

It’s the same chip.  You can tune ot however you please yourself.  Just pick whichever looks cooler.  I personally really like zotac cards for tuning with firestorm (just not an afterburner fan), but ASUS makes a good product too.

I edit the shit out of my posts.  Refresh before you respond.
