I bought a Logitech G910 keyboard a couple years ago because of the number of extra programmable macro keys it had but am increasingly finding the keyswitch resistance to be insufficient for me (I can only type with one hand and don't have 100% fine motor control). This results in too-frequent double key presses and accidentally actuated keys.  I've since bought a Stream Deck so the number of extra macro keys can be reduced but still need at least five. My requirements:

  • Full size, 104 keys
  • Media control keys (a roller to control volume would be nice)
  • Backlit (functionality equivalent to Logitech's Echo Press would be nice)
  • Five extra macro keys on left side

Any recommendations? Can be mechanical or otherwise. Can be wired or wireless.  The resistance of my Alienware m15 R7 laptop's keyboard is pretty comfortable. I'm looking at the EVGA Z12 RGB, Corsair K55 PRO (Lite or XT), Budget is under $200 CDN.

@skiF I ended up ordering the Corsair 57 RGB which is not mechanical. Looking at your other post, my requirements were more stringent as I wanted more macro keys and a tactile feel rather than linear.  Not a lot of options out there. For you, I think you need to decide what kind of switch you want (which dictates how typing "feels") and go from there.

Got the K57 RGB and been using it for a few days. Some impressions:

  • Keypress resistance is what I'm looking for. Gamers will probably hate it, but I like that keypresses don't register at the slightest touch.
  • RGB lighting is definitely a step down from the Logitech G910 (which is the best I've seen). Doesn't come close in terms of brightness or colour vibrancy.
  • Keys are slightly smaller on the K57.
  • The key lettering is smaller (even taking into account smaller keys) and some symbols are hard to make out with a quick glance. Seems to be compensating for the poorer RGB lighting quality? Lighting is a bit uneven even with smaller lettering.
  • I'm going to miss the volume roller and backlit media keys on the G910.
  • Lighting controls via the iCUE software are better than Logitech's G HUB but I still haven't figured out how to turn the lighting off when the keyboard goes to sleep.
  • iCUE's equivalent to Logitech's Echo Press lighting effect actually works with modifier keys and Windows Sticky Keys (companies: if you can't be bothered to make sure your stuff works with basic accessibility features even after prodding then you kinda suck).
  • Key assignment UI for both pieces of software could use the services of a good UI designer. Otherwise, probably a toss up.
  • I don't know why no company offers a keyboard with modifier keys working for macro keys (OS limitation?). That functionality would be very useful.
