Budget (including currency): $300-500

Country: USA

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Minecraft, LoL, Ark, office work

Other details:  I currently have a few parts already that were leftovers from previous builds or projects.  They don't necessarily have to be used for this build, but they are certainly worth considering.  They are listed below:

  • GTX 1070Ti ($150)
  • 2x8GB G.Skill 3600 RAM (Free)
  • i5-6600K CPU (Free)
  • 1TB Seagate BarraCuda 3.5" 7200RPM HDD
  • Corsair 200R ATX Case (Free, but may be missing stand-offs for mATX mobos)
  • Gaming mouse, headphones, and mousepad (Free)

This build is for my girlfriend who has done some light gaming on her laptop (Minecraft, Stardew, For the King) and will hopefully spark her interest in some bigger games.  The only peripherals needed are a monitor and keyboard.

Please help me find the right balance between these used parts for value and newer components for performance.

if you have g skill ddr4 3600mhz ram just get a ryzen 5 3600/5600x on the used market. Grab a b45/b550 board. Use the 1070ti, they are still great for 1080p. Get a decent powersupply and if you can reuse the case.

You can get a ryzen 5 3600 for 80ish used and a b550/b450 for not much more.

Throw in a decent power supply for less than 60/70$

You can make a pretty decent system

Im sure other people can add to this.

OP already has decent ram. No need for them to buy more. Plus the motherboard and PSU you picked are drastically overpriced.

Seriously, an NHL-9i. Its a good cooler for small form factor, but an NHU12S redux for about that price will be substantially better in terms of performance and noise.

That was the lowest priced board for the chip

For a new one you found on PCpartpicker yes, you can find used ones by manually looking for much much less than that. You need to keep in mind that it's an EOL platform anything new/un-used is going to be absurdly expensive.

I see you having two options, luckily everything you have is pretty much compatible.

So your first option is to use everything you have so you would really only need to buy a Cooler, PSU, motherboard, and SSD and you're off to the races. One problem with that is 6th gen motherboards are going to be pricey since they are EOL and have been for awhile. You can find Z270 motherboards all day at around $80 to $90 on Ebay, but these are used boards so you'll have to really look into the one you want and make sure it's good before you purchase it.

Your second option is to do a full new platform build, you'll need a motherboard, CPU, SSD, and PSU. So essentially the same but you'd also need a CPU, the funny thing is though that you could probably get a much better performing CPU/Mobo combo than the 6600k for not much more of a price due to the pricing being so wack for EOL components.

You could find a cheaper board than this B550 too just wanted to get one in as a place holder. The Ryzen 5 5500 comes with a cooler too so no need to pay extra either. To keep the cost down and since you already have a 1TB HDD, I just did a 512GB Nvme for this one.

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/p3fB6r

Also keep in mind that while re-using the 6600k is cheaper by about $90 it is going to perform quite a bit worse than going with a modern Ryzen 5 CPU like the 5500. Not to mention the 5500 will still supported a bit longer, whereas the 6600k hasn't been supported for several years now.

If I continue to use the 6600K, would finding any Z170 motherboard on ebay along with a build like this be good for the budget?

although it seems to be your only option i would recommend against used hardware ,but, again there seems to be no solve for that in this system. other than that however, your build looks great!
