Hey guys!

I got a motherboard cpu combo free from my cousin because it had been having issues. He said it ran hot and would randomly crash. I set it up in a test system to try and get it working and it ran cinebench fine, 1847 score at 70ish degrees celsius, then after the test it crashed and rebooted. When restarted it runs for 3-15 minutes before crashing. Prime95 thermal throttles the cpu almost instantly, even at the lowest stress test.

Specs:

i7 4790k (with a stock intel cooler I adapted onto it)

Gigabyte Z97mx gaming mobo

2x4gb HyperX fury ddr3 ram

870 evo 500gb SSD

500w non modular power supply

I decided to work on the temp issue first, turning the cpu vcore value in the bios to the lowest it would go before I got a blue screen (1.002V). That brought the temps down, but it would still crash.

The first thing I tried to stop the crashing was bring the speeds down. The base clock from 4ghz incrementally down to 2.8ghz, and the boost clock from 4.4ghz all core incrementally down to 2.9ghz. This changed nothing, after each frequency reduction it would still crash.

After a crash the bios would always report a boot failure detected notice.

Something I did notice though is that it seems somewhat more stable under load, usually crashing after I stop the stress test than in the middle of it, if that means anything? I'm currently trying some of the fixes from older threads about this, but wanted to know if there was a newer solution? Thanks
