Hello people,

I have a question about a very odd (at least for me) problem. A friend of mine recently bought an MSI RTX 3070 Gaming Trio graphics card. It was bought used as far as I remember and he always connected it to a monitor through the display port and I guess never checked the HDMI port when buying.

He recently wanted to use a dual monitor set up and when he wanted to connect the second monitor (ASUS 24" VG245H) via HDMI port he got no display output. Now this is where things get interesting:

Thinking it might be a driver issue we tried an older driver, the latest driver and uninstalled all the GPU drivers and used a default Windows one, updated GPU BiOS through the MSI software but none helped. He had windows 11 as the installed OS:

-We tried 3 different HDMI (2 ver. 2.0 or above and 1 older version do not know what exactly) cables and none worked. We confirmed the cables do work with other devices. And when we use DP to HDMI adapter and connect with it (DP on PC side-HDMI on monitor side) we do get an output.

-Thinking maybe monitor is the problem he tried it on his main LG monitor and also on an LG TV but didn't get an output with them either.

-Tried switching from UEFI to CSM in the BiOS. After that still no display on TV and the Asus monitor but in BiOS we can get output with the LG monitor. But when it boots to OS it's a black screen again.

So that made us think it may be is a weird OS issue and installed Windows 10 on a different drive:

-With Windows 10 we did not get a display output with the Asus monitor and the TV but we did get an output on the LG monitor.

-Again we tried all the different cables and got similar results apart from getting an output on the LG monitor.

-But this time the weird thing was that we got an output when booting to the OS with the LG monitor but no output when in BiOS...

Also to make sure it is not a PCI-E slot problem we tried a different slot on the motherboard and got the same results again. We didn't try the GPU on a different PC or a motherboard but we will try on mine just to make sure.

So can anyone help us figure out if we missed anything troubleshooting the problem or is the any other way to make sure if this is a software, firmware or a hardware(GPU itself or something else) problem?

Thanks in advance and have a nice day.

I cannot help! but from my experience with lots of different cards/cables/monitors some just dont play ball, though there might well be a solution, I end up trying cards on 2 monitors and a tv using a variety of cables when I come across a card with this issue, always end up eliminating the gpu being faulty but never get a solution to the vairiants not working

whats wrong with just using a DP to HDMI dongle?

I would guess the HDMI port on the card is faulty

My guess was the HDMI port too but it working on Windows 10 and with a specific monitor makes me believe otherwise.

And sure can use DP but me and even more than me my friend are kind of obsessed at least to find what exactly is wrong even if we can't fix it. Is is just a matter of satisfying the curiosity at some point.
